I get one tattoo from every book I publish, and I need help picking the next one! Which unicycle do you prefer, or or two? It's gonna be black and gray ink but otherwise accurate.

I went to the suburban Seattle B&N I used to work at as a teenager and had a moment of wondering why they flipped the men's and women's bathrooms. Then I remembered that I am transgender.

I am so excited to FINALLY share the cover of my next novel, Should I Stay Or Should You Go! It's my first YA, and we'll be revisiting Bug and Annabelle as eighteen year olds trying to figure out New York City, themselves, and each other. I can't wait for you to see what these kids have been up to.
Cover of the novel, two white teens crossing paths in the entrance to a subway stationSometimes it’s not you. Or me. Sometimes, it’s both of us.
For Thomas, attending Erickson University is bigger than trading in small-town Vermont for life in Manhattan. It’s a chance for reinvention, to ditch the “nice trans boy” persona he’s been stuck with since middle school, and finally just be a normal-ish guy.
Blending in has never been Annabelle’s style, but ever since her most recent (and completely disastrous) breakup, she’s been counting down the days until she can escape to college across the country. Nobody in New York City knows anything about her or her exes, so it’s the ideal opportunity to become a new and improved Annabelle.
When Thomas and Annabelle meet, sparks fly. Neither one can believe they’ve found someone so perfect before classes even start. But when Thomas finds out that Annabelle hasn't been completely honest about her dating history, he begins to question whether she’s more interested in dating him, or dating someone like him. And try as she might, Annabelle can’t seem to stop her history from repeating itself.
In his first young adult novel, award-winning author Kyle Lukoff revisits his beloved protagonists from the Newbery Honor book Too Bright to See and Different Kinds of Fruit, with a whirlwind romance as messy and meaningful as New York City itself.

My best friend/ex's dad wrote an excellent musing on Ash Wednesday that is fun to share.
Then there is Ash Wednesday, the sadly ignored step-child of holidays, or maybe it’s better described as the ultimate unholiday. This is arguably, as they say, the most significant day on any calendar, whose startling purpose is to remind us, "remember man that thou art dust, and unto dust thou shalt return," just in case we had forgotten. The day arrives without cheers of joy and virtually no custom, except for one simple ceremony found among the Roman Christians, n which a cross of palm ash is smeared upon one’s forehead, assuming one has the self-confidence to appear in public so clearly marked. What a wonderfully paleogothic way to acknowledge our own deaths, and what could have more pertinence to life than an awareness of mortality? Unfortunately not everyone's response to that question is a resounding "nothing."

A little peek at my next picture book, THE VICIOUS CYCLE. I feel like this describes a lot of us right now, but I promise it gets out <3 (out on 10/6; pre-order here, or wherever you like to get your books bookshop.org/p/books/the-...)
Spread from a picture book. Text reads "And when the unicycle remembered the stuck days and the scared days and the sad days, it couldn't get going at all," with watercolor images of an emotional unicycle stuck in a rut.

Last month I realized that I've been super depressed, and what I needed was a reason to get out of the house and connect with people. Today's my first day as a bookseller at River Bend Books, and I'm so excited to do the only thing I've ever wanted to do, which is help connect people with books.

Did you know I have a young adult novel coming out? I'm so curious about how people are going to respond to work that isn't written with the elementary school set (or their many gatekeepers) in mind. If you're in Boston tomorrow you can help answer that question!
