Can an emergency be a defence to a parking ticket? A Saskatchewan driver stopped after his truck began leaking gasoline and was ticketed anyway. The King's Bench found him not guilty, holding that the defence of necessity applied. Read more: loom.ly/1wYU4Ow

Police called a lawyer 9 times, but never identified the client. In R. v. Belliard, the court found this violated the accused's Charter right to counsel because police must make reasonable efforts to connect a detainee with their lawyer of choice. Know your rights. loom.ly/Y7WD73g
