Victor Hugo 160 years ago speaking to us, here, now:

The last page of Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables. It reads: “Nevertheless, those who study the health of society must now and then shake their heads. Even the strongest-minded and most clear- thinking must have their moments of misgiving. Will the future ever arrive? The question seems almost justified when one considers the shadows looming ahead, the sombre confrontation of egoists and outcasts. On the side of the egoists, prejudice - that darkness of a rich education - appetite that grows with intoxication, the bemuse- ment of prosperity which blunts the sense, the fear of suffering which in some cases goes so far as to hate all sufferers, and un- shakeable complacency, the ego so inflated that it stifles the soul; and on the side of the outcasts, greed and envy, resentment at the happiness of others, the turmoil of the human animal in search of personal fulfilment, hearts filled with fog, misery, needs, and fatalism, and simple, impure ignorance. Should we continue to look upwards? Is the light we can see in the sky one of those which will presently be extinguished? The ideal is terrifying to behold, lost as it is in the depths, small, isolated, a pin-point, brilliant but threatened on all sides by the dark forces that surround it: nevertheless, no more in danger than a star in the jaws of the clouds.”

Selling at BayCon this weekend and we made some cards to tell folks about our books! This very kind quote from @catrambo.bsky.social was years ago but I’ve never forgotten it. 💙

A book cover: Black Angel with a picture of an otter girl in a white dress sinking into water; in front of the cover is a white index card with text: “Dangerous Spirits (Green Fairy, Red Devil, Black Angel) SUPERNATURAL NEW ADULT: Sol, Alexei, and Meg are finishing up high school and uncertain about the world after. Each of them will have an adventure with a spirit from another time that teaches them valuable lessons about relationships, identity, and life.
“Black Angel by Kyell Gold shows how emotionally satisfying furry fiction can be as well as how accurately it can reflect today’s landscape.” -Cat Rambo, Nebula winning author and former president of SFWA”

Hulu/Disney explaining that gosh, sometimes even if you pay not to see ads, they have to show them to you, shrug emoji, sorry not sorry.

“We are clarifying that, as we continue to increase the breadth and depth of the content we make available to you, circumstances may require that certain titles and types of content include ads even in our ‘no ads’ or ‘ad free’ subscription tiers.”
