I collect things on this little internet of ours, and have for a long time. I want to get back into the oldschool sort of blogging where you just post whatever's on your mind. That's a process in the project queue currently behind working on a little TTRPG world for Patreon and working on my long-deferred novel about fox people and adventure across an ancient continent full of mystery and mayhem. For now, the stuff that's stuck with me, year after year. If you don't keep up with the cast of Star Trek the way I do, you might not know Wil Wheaton has written about his experiences as a child actor with toxic parents, or the way the TNG crew became family. Or how he nearly succumbed to alcoholism like so many former child actors and how he's thriving lately. He's also an original blogger with a podcast where he reads to you and interviews authors. Anil Dash is another long-time follow: a rare sort of New Yorker who can bring you along with his appreciation for the city rather than beat you over the head with it. His posts right after 9/11 and yearly posts provide a rare view into changing views and feelings about the day, the place, and the world around it. He also writes smart things about tech. I don't follow John Scalzi's blog like I used to, but any long-time blogger is worth reading when they do retrospective posts. And he hits on a problem I see trying to find blogs to share here: > Speaking of things that actively denote the passage of time, today is also the 28th anniversary of Whatever, the blog you are reading right now. Whatever is definitively one of the longest-running personal blogs in the world, although one must acknowledge that the “blogosphere” is but a shadow of what it used to be in terms of size and interest… until, that is, one starts to think on all the writers (particularly journalists, a job I myself used to have) who have now posted up to Substack or Ghost or Beehiiv, or who have started an email newsletter or whatever, because mainline journalism is being private equity-ed to death and all the journalists who were laid off still want to be able to eat. Yes, the blogosphere is back, I say, in a new, and perhaps slightly more economically desperate form. Don’t necessarily expect any of the Substackers to agree with me on this, however. I won't link to a Substack, for reasons well-articulated on Leave Substack. Often, if a blog is still up, there are no posts for years. The more common case is the former blogger who only posts on Twitter with all the same problems as Substack. They might be on Threads or Instagram, which aren't as bad, but aren't really blogs. Threads is inaccessible to me since Mark Zuckerberg's philosophy on identity is encoded in its demand that I provide a photo ID to prove my identity, which it would not. Most of the rest have just vanished, or only keep a list of publications on their website. Or they're only on YouTube, which is by far one of the best places of all the holes creatives lock themselves into, but it's not a blog. Most people aren't Hank Green with his ability to shoot the shit with an audience while not being buried by YouTube's opaque algorithm. He has the We're Here newsletter. On Beehiiv, but at least it's text, and not on Substack. The open web isn't doing great. I have a list of 300+ individual websites and over 2000 links. Doing something with that is a project and, given history, I don't think many people will look at it because it's not as enticing as a Reel or a Short. I like YouTube Shorts. I wish all the comedians, artists, and smart people I enjoy in short clips there would start a blog. But I know why they don't. Who would read it? If you're a busy gigging comedian, do you take the time to hammer out a blog post that either no one will read, or too many people will misread, or do you stay on the podcast circuit with kind people and professional editors making sure your words come across as well as you spoke them? Anyway. Back to the novel.

April 1, 2020 — More Satellites Than Planes
Good advice circulated early in the covid pandemic: take lots of notes, you'll want to remember this era. I tried! This was pretty much it. I'm doing a lot of retrospecting on a lot of things 6 years into the 2020s. * * * It’s about 9PM on the first of April, 2020. Georgia’s governor just issued a shelter-in-place order after a March that saw new global covid-19 cases rise from a couple thousand a day to over 70 thousand daily. The order ends on April 13th. It may be too late to stop a major outbreak, but it seems like the people at the top are catching up. Cities, counties, events, and many states paid attention sooner. Maybe he’ll extend it when he realizes things aren’t getting better on the 13th. Between the weeks of thick clouds and my anxiety about going out for a walk amid an outbreak, I haven’t seen the night sky in a while. The steady stream of planes to and from Atlanta is missing. I saw a lone, dim speck of light float by, but no telltale blinking lights. A satellite. A digital check of overhead planes confirms it’s not just the clouds getting in the way. Whether it’s the order or a weeks-long normal, I do not know. Almost as quiet is the nearby highway. I blamed my stopped up ears at first, but I heard one car go by every few minutes. I’m concerned, but optimistic. Good luck, everyone. Wash your hands, dab when you cough, and keep six feet away. I see one plane overhead as I finish this draft. There’s hope.

Disempowering large, central sources of truth like mass media and government is probably good in the long run but we're in an anarchic atomization of truth that's not great to live through even if it's probably unavoidable.

Invisible floating points are a menace. I didn't have all the cells in one column set to currency, so the calculations done on them came out about a dollar off. There's definitely never been a movie plot based on this.

A long time ago, in an IRC channel far away, I mentioned I was learning C++. Someone said: "I wish I could still learn stuff. I'm too old." I asked how old he was. We were the same age. I hope his attitude changed in the years since because 18 sure is early to decide you can't learn anything.

It was sad watching artists rip down years, decades even, of web galleries full of comments and stats and proof of life before generative AI just to reupload it with some sketchy anti-AI overlay applied. Training methods mooted it almost instantly, and the damage to art history is permanent.

I promise I won't retaliate against all the people who were like "lol why doesn't the south just spend billions maintaining snow preparedness for 48 hours of snow every 2-3 years" when they're struggling with heat they aren't prepared for from my heat pumped, sealed, and insulated palace.

These are all my music projects up to 2026. Paying Patreon supporters get it with their support. For everyone else, the first 100 buyers get it for 50% off. This is the equivalent of being a $5 patron for the remainder of the year. clubhouse.kyefox.com/posts/2016-202…

Mass culture had problems. We were just used to them and largely took them for granted. Atomic culture for a century or two will do us some good. I think having a million different, isolated incubators for new ideas is good, but some people do miss things having mass appeal.

If you're looking for your first audio recorder and think "I don't need one with XLR inputs," think again. I thought that with my zoom h2n back in 2018 and wish I'd spent a little more on one with at least one input.

Something I started to notice is some people become fixed in an era. They might have been progressive for that era, but the world moved on and they didn't. They would have marched with MLK, but gay rights are too far. Or they were pro-gay rights in the 90s, but trans rights is too far. And so on […]

It's hard enough questioning what we believe about ourselves. Questioning what we believe about others is another much harder level. A recurring issue I see is people who've done the work on gender and sexuality re: their own experience fail to do that work with their beliefs about other identities.
