Crab nebula. A star that violently exploded ~970 years ago and left a neutron star in its center. 🔭 🧪
An oval nebula with a complex structure against a black background. On the oval's exterior lie curtains of glowing red and orange fluffy material. Interior to this outer shell lie large-scale loops of mottled filaments of yellow-white and green, studded with clumps and knots. Translucent thin ribbons of smoky white lie within the remnant’s interior, brightest toward its centre.

First ever direct image of another solar system... A multi-planet system to be exact... With a young, sun-like star... 300 light-years away from us...

I got to write in Scientific American about one of my all-time favorite cosmic objects: Barnard 68! It's like a hole in space, except… it isn't. www.scientificamerican.com/article/what... 🧪🔭

What’s Inside Our Galaxy’s Darkest Place?
Barnard 68 is often mistaken for a hole in space, but it’s actually a dense, opaque cloud of dust—for now

Hubble snaps NGC 5189 Credit:NASA, ESA and the Hubble Heritage Team
The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope celebrates the holiday season with a striking image of the planetary nebula NGC 5189. The intricate structure of the stellar eruption looks like a giant and brightly coloured ribbon in space.
