Northern Harrier flying over a cornfield, seen yesterday on the Samish Flats, near Edison, Washington. She was patrolling an open field between me and the cornfield. Harriers are one of my favorite birds. "Hawk of the Marsh"

I was set up in field yesterday afternoon, when a Great Blue Heron landed very close to me. I stood very still to get a few images. Eventually it decided that it did like my presence, and took off, eventually flying over a distant corn field.

Female red-winged blackbird, seen yesterday at sunset in the Skagit River estuary. I rarely give these birds much thought, but actually in the light of sunset, they are quite beautiful!

Here are a couple more Double-crested Cormorants, seen a couple of days ago at sunset from Ala Spit on Whidbey Island, Washington. These guys and gals regularly fly between Ala Spit and Hope Island. They can also be seen flying through Deception Pass (e.g., from Pass Island).

Great Blue Heron, with a nearby duck (partially hidden), in the Skagit River Estuary, Washington state. I watched the heron for some time before realizing that there was a nearby duck. They did not seem to be bothered by the close proximity. Seen yesterday evening, just before sunset.

Might be! This is the time of year that Pectoral Sandpipers are seen around here apparently. Also, it might be a Least Sandpiper. Very likely one of those three. Wish I knew more about them. Pretty soon we will be getting large flocks of dunlins added to the mix! Thanks, Dave!

Seen a couple of days ago at sunset at Hayton Preserve, Fir Island, Washington. I think this is a Western Sandpiper, but please let me know if you think otherwise. It was part of a small flock (20 to 25 birds) swooping back and forth over the water at high tide.
