My attempts to find the only candy corn that matters in my part of the SF Bay area have come up short. Am I going to have to order my Halloween crack online?

A 20 ounce package of Brach's Classic Candy Corn.

How did Trump, this yankee know-it-all opposite-of-Andy-Griffith, become so popular in the South? It broke our brains but now we're super awesome. 🔗 Watch the full video: youtu.be/V06oiD3DH6I #Trump #SouthernPolitics #yankee #andygriffith #south

I will always love you guys, but that little "...or did it heal them?" makes me love you that much more. Be well, you two.

I was at the CVS this morning and completely forgot to look for the Brach's candy corn, despite the fact that Halloween candy is seemingly everywhere already. I'm disappointed in myself.

There's a huge 2000s-shaped gap in my pop music knowledge, thanks to all sorts of adult stuff (working in China, going to grad school, getting married, starting a high-pressure job). I'm slowly filling those gaps, but it's hard to believe this monster came out 18+ years ago. That chorus KILLS.

Michael, these are fascinating; thanks for sharing them. I hope all's well with your blog -- I saw you took it private, and It'd be a loss for it not to be on the open web, but I imagine you're getting brigaded by patriotic youth...

Good lord, I had no idea these existed. Fascinating, and gorgeous.

It's happening everywhere. A local Episcopal church saw their congregation split because the younger members thought the church was too accepting and welcoming. They even tried to take the building, until the older folks who built it (literally and metaphorically) told them to get lost.

Shin Yujin, one of their singers, put this out in 2023, and it's just amazing. I've listened to it on repeat more than a couple of times.

LEENALCHI have a new EP(?) out, which is reason enough to revisit "Tiger is Coming". I found them through their connection to SsingSsing, and I was hooked from the very start. I've also tried -- and failed -- to learn that dance.

Isn't it pretty? I'd love for him to finish the song, or for someone to remix it into something longer.

I come to this completely context-free, but this is another one that ticks every box for me. Yes, it's very close to "Runnin'" by the Pharcyde (which, CLASSIC), but there's room in my world for both :-)

I attended a party in Evanston, Il the summer of 1990, and decided partway through to find a record store, because the party _needed_ some funk. This is the record I was trying to buy. Yes, I was intoxicated, but I wasn't wrong.

Ratboys get better with each release, and each time I think "this is the one that breaks through". I hope this one does, because this record is just so good. "Light Night Mountains All That" is pretty high on my list of all-time greats. (Kudos to KEXP for the impeccable engineering/mixing.)

Oh, of course! But there are so many folks who don't know what's out there, I didn't think it would hurt. Such a sea change from when I was in grad school, tracking down quotes by scanning through indices, flipping through pages, and submitting ILL requests.

Also note that the earliest of these scanned copies was digitized November 20, 2007, so it's been out there and discoverable for almost 19 years.

I assume these were sold through either Famous-Barr or Stix Baer & Fuller, though there's a small chance they came from Vandervoort's. I'll have to ask my mom.

We had this pattern when I was very little, and I've spent years wondering what the pattern was called. Finally found the right combination of description and site, and now I know. Probably full of lead, but I may get a piece from Ebay and test just for fun. www.replacements.com/china-metlox...

Just discovered that Nadine's discography is available on YouTube. Criminally under-appreciated, and one of the best bands I've ever seen live. All three records should have been huge. "Every time I touch the telephone, I know there is a wire straight to your home."

YouTube keeps serving up winners. This is such a charismatic performance from an artist with an unusual backstory -- at the time this was made, she was working as a cleaner at a love hotel, stories about which she shares here: note.com/kkkk_k1109).

Lots of Japanese music in my feed lately, including Shonen Knife's cover of My Bloody Valentine's "When You Sleep." Like a lot of my favorite covers, it's unmistakably of the covering artist, and provides an entirely unique take on the source material. This one also happens to be cute as hell.

I never noticed this, but it's both charming and hilarious. Especially at 1:32, where he catches himself -- or more likely, where he was caught by someone offscreen. www.youtube.com/watch?v=drOk...
