He was arrested multiple times for his work and activism in 2016, 2019, 2020, and 2022. His photography was shown in exhibitions across Rojhelat, Başûr, Iran, and Canada.

Mehdi Tavakoli studied graphic design and photography, then returned to his hometown to teach, running the Kurdistan Photographers' House and Çaw Art House. He worked especially with young people and women, training them to document their own communities.

Mehdi Tavakoli, a Kurdish photographer from Sine (Sanandaj), was killed on 26 July 2026, along with his mother, Maryam Aslani, and his sister, Somayye. Their car was shot at by the IRGC and the so-called Ministry of Intelligence on the road east of Baneh.
