ktoks @ktoks.bsky.social · 30/12/2024I don't think this is a bad idea, especially when you get something out of doing it. They will most likely have a LOT more contributors and many more users testing out nightly builds because it's easier to do so in rust. 000
ktoks @ktoks.bsky.social · 26/12/2024@hankgreen.bsky.social hey Hank, I just read a paper on chirality and right-handedness vs left-handedness in biology. What if dark matter was kind of the same thing- left-handed particles, while non-dark matter is right-handed? Is that possible? Is that an insane idea? 000
ktoks @ktoks.bsky.social · 26/12/2024Me too, my friend, me too. The holidays can be a lot sometimes. 010
ktoks @ktoks.bsky.social · 16/12/2024Same. Let's stop focusing on politics and talk about new tools, things you're working on, and advancing our skills. 010
ktoks @ktoks.bsky.social · 14/12/2024I despise that this is such a problem. I ran into this yesterday with a government site. 120
ktoks @ktoks.bsky.social · 14/12/2024When you try it out again, can you dm me about it? I'd like to know. 230
ktoks @ktoks.bsky.social · 14/12/2024This is why I want a Linux phone. Not Android. I prefer having full control. 110
ktoks @ktoks.bsky.social · 13/12/2024Hack into your own vm and sudo rm -rf / to see what happens, add a new user, add them to a new group, lock down the new user like they are a financial institution intern, install a read-only OS, install Redox_OS, install a non-Linux(Unix) VM, write a review about your favorite open source tool. 010
ktoks @ktoks.bsky.social · 13/12/2024There's also: contribute to an open source project, write an issue, write a makefile, write a docker composer file, add a config to the application you rewrote, read a manpage, write a manpage, write a tldr, design a high level architectural solution, write a speech about why it should exist... 110
ktoks @ktoks.bsky.social · 13/12/2024Why isn't there an Advent of IT? Code can be part of it. Perhaps one could set up a compute cluster, build a daemon, install Arch, reconfigure Neovim, set up a new language, build a dotfile repo, build a webpage, write a readme, rewrite a script you use often in a compiled language, etc... 110
ktoks @ktoks.bsky.social · 09/12/2024I wonder if you could pipe it through a Python script or something??? There's something called 'volume lock'. 210
ktoks @ktoks.bsky.social · 08/12/2024So my light switch in the master bedroom shorted out and threw the breaker. It fried somehow and now I don't have power in there. Lovely. 000
ktoks @ktoks.bsky.social · 05/12/2024Congrats! I'm currently testing out libre office to see if it's going to be an easy transition for my team from Microsoft office products. Getting away from closed source will be nice. 110
ktoks @ktoks.bsky.social · 04/12/2024I've seen a lot of bad about them lately. Apparently once you're known to have made mistakes, you become a target for hackers? 110
ktoks @ktoks.bsky.social · 30/11/2024I was going to say this. I use it all the time. Especially when I'm stressed. 030
ktoks @ktoks.bsky.social · 26/11/2024I've decided it's time to grow up and put a picture of myself on here... 🤣 110
ktoks @ktoks.bsky.social · 25/11/2024Yeah, I'm not sure they can make up the difference fast enough. They may lay off many more of their folks. 000
ktoks @ktoks.bsky.social · 25/11/2024I needed to hear this. Thank you. I'm fighting an uphill battle to get my company to upgrade their software and offer more tools for developers. We currently use some software on its pre 1.0 still... Version 27 just released. 010
ktoks @ktoks.bsky.social · 25/11/2024Yeah, this is one of those things that I just don't play with. Threading? Absolutely. Environment changes in a script or application? Nope. Never. 000
ktoks @ktoks.bsky.social · 22/11/2024It's surprisingly even better in Windows 11. Especially if you have to use a VPN. 110
ktoks @ktoks.bsky.social · 22/11/2024A fragile barrier to the outside world meant to let light shine through. Kind of like the operating system that shares the same name. WSL is where the light shines through. 000
ktoks @ktoks.bsky.social · 22/11/2024Me too! I'm hoping to see the Microsoft team build a 6.12 kernel in the near future. That real-time feature is going to be a game changer! 010
ktoks @ktoks.bsky.social · 22/11/2024I'm so excited for this. Real-time is the last piece in the puzzle to make Linux the perfect operating system for desktop machines. (It's already so close without it)! I'm so stoked, I can't wait to try it out! 000
ktoks @ktoks.bsky.social · 22/11/2024I don't know if there is a better way to explain that aspect but that's just part of it. Privacy and a range of tools those other OSes simply don't support as well. 110
ktoks @ktoks.bsky.social · 22/11/2024I end up using bash or the Python repl for math all the time... You could try this? 000
ktoks @ktoks.bsky.social · 22/11/2024I use it all the time, it makes my life so much easier... I need more tricks like these in my life, so if you find any, please share? 110
ktoks @ktoks.bsky.social · 21/11/2024Did you know that if you add a space at the end of your alias, it will allow any following commands to unalias as well? For example - if you want to use fd and execute some alias, it will now resolve the executed alias. alias fd="fd "; fd . $some_mask -x $some_alias; 110
ktoks @ktoks.bsky.social · 21/11/2024Whenever I hear "One More Light", I'm reminded of that fact. That and anything by Mike Shinoda soon after Chester passed... I wish I could have met him. I'm not taking that risk ever again. I'm going to see LP next spring. 000
ktoks @ktoks.bsky.social · 21/11/2024I'd suggest system76. Not only are you getting more bang for your buck, and a private OS, but you're also supporting a company that gives back. Also- if you ever plan on doing anything on Apple silicon, research that it's supported first. I know a few folks who have made that mistake. 000
ktoks @ktoks.bsky.social · 21/11/2024Just finished my .bashrc sync across all of my VMs! Feels good! 000
ktoks @ktoks.bsky.social · 18/11/2024Yeah, sounds like your environment is about as complicated as my work environment. It's not pretty. 000
ktoks @ktoks.bsky.social · 18/11/2024It is! I just can't wait for kernel 6.12 to release! RT for desktop is going to slap! 000
ktoks @ktoks.bsky.social · 15/11/2024I installed Pop!_OS on my sister's, and my mother in laws computers recently, they've used them without any issues. I've only had one phone call, and, come to think of it, that was actually a router problem, nothing to do with Linux. 000
ktoks @ktoks.bsky.social · 15/11/2024You could try Linux... This isn't an issue with anything Ubuntu-based unless your particular brand simply doesn't support open source at all. 000
ktoks @ktoks.bsky.social · 15/11/2024I will! I have a few side projects I want to build with them. 000
ktoks @ktoks.bsky.social · 15/11/2024I've been thinking of learning lip gloss and bubble tea for a while now. Any tips? 110
