Some demographic groups that typically have less wealth saw big declines. Median net worth for Black families fell by 25%, while it increased for all other racial and ethnic groups. It fell by 55% for people without a high-school diploma, the largest percentage decline for this group in
the survey's history.

Oh good another grant rejection. We have applied for 7 grants so far this year, with a bunch more we’ll be applying for this fall. We’ve been rejected by 6, and got runner up for 1 of them, resulting in $1000. Our annual operating budget is 250k. Oh wait that reminds me. Anybody need a tote bag??

I know, my friend, it is tempting to declare that this is not who we are in response to the news that they are planning to livestream an execution, but know, my friend, even if this is not who we are it is time to admit that this is who many of our neighbors are.

The epidemiologist told me “I’m so tired of this shit,” so I asked her if she meant Covid or measles or Ebola or plague or the headline “Sexually transmitted diarrhea is on the rise — and it’s morphing into a drug-resistant superbug,” and in response: she sighed heavily.

Apparently airlines can be “an early warning system against” illnesses, as crews can “conduct passive surveillance of passengers,” but I can’t help think it would be better to instead have an agency (properly funded and staffed) responsible for controlling diseases.

accommodating and convenient as possible. Speak your mind even if your voice shakes. Don't subscribe to extreme forms of modesty, own your
beauty, intelligence and energy. Be fierce and unapologetic, always.

The work that makes money relies on the vast amount of work that doesn't. Basic income recognizes both, supporting the work such as that of care, creative work, research and study, and acting in the commons.
An Iceberg showing what's visible is jobs and the huge amount Invisible is unpaid work.

There have now been five deaths in the measles outbreak in Pennsylvania. There have now been 3,926 deaths in the Ebola outbreak in Congo. And what these deaths teach us about outbreaks is that it’s about who does the counting, and it’s about how people decide who counts.

After he returned from the grocery store he grumbled that he does not know which is worse: when the produce is possibly contaminated, or when the produce is too damn expensive; and so I told him that neither is a sign of a healthy society.

One of the most harrowing things about academia, when you're a grad student, is how vulnerable you are to how you're perceived by more senior researchers. Your career advancement depends on confidential letters of reference & private discussions amongst faculty. You have no information or control.
