The Departed (relationships forged in the neighborhood play an important role) and Poltergeist (the story focuses on a particular neighborhood).

Two for me this week. The Ballad of Wallis Island - a man (fanatic) tries to reunite his favorite musical duo. Left-Handed Girl - a Taiwanese movie (co-written and edited by Sean Baker, incidentally), focused on a three-person family. I enjoyed them both!

Splitsville. Michael Angelo Covino was tasked with directing, acting, and co-authoring the screenplay. He did a pretty good job in all three roles.

Sorry, Baby. Directing debut of Eva Victor. I look forward to her directing more in the future. (I was also taken by her performance in front of the camera.)

Nolan’s last two movies, which both heavily focus on overcoming challenges.

Sleepless in Seattle. New York City may not be in the title but it plays an important role in the movie. I hadn’t watched this since I saw it in theaters. It holds up.

Ella Enchanted. This was a family watch and added to my viewing of early Hathaway. Some ridiculous effects and events but also some charming moments. Funny to see Hugh Dancy, who I know best from serious roles on Hannibal and Law and Order, playing a light role as the heartthrob prince.

Three this week for me. Toy Story and Toy Story 2. Both movies involve rescues by friends (you got a friend in me, indeed). Also, Interstellar, where the skills of the mission crew are needed to help save humanity.

Michael. In the movie, you see The Jackson 5 knocking The Beatles (Let It Be) off the top of the charts. Also, while not depicted in the movie, Michael and Paul had a duet on Thriller.

Cruel Intentions. I hadn’t seen this one before and it is filled with toxic actions. I think it was intentional camp, which worked for the most part. I do have some questions about the resolution.

Two this week: Kramer Vs. Kramer and Ready or Not. On the surface, two very different films. However, they’re both about family and marriage.

Persona and Personal Shopper. It was my first Bergman and I am looking forward to watching it again in the future, as well as digging more into his filmography. Personal Shopper was a wonderful mix of so many things.

The Roses. A remake/reimagining of The War of the Roses. This movie should have been more fun and enjoyable in a dark comedy way.

Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice. I would have enjoyed hearing what the word of mouth response was when this came out in 1969.

Two this week. If I Had Legs I’d Kick You and 10 Things I Hate About You. Rose Byrne deserves all the accolades she has received for Legs. Incredible performance. I hadn’t seen 10 Things since first seeing it when it came out but it holds up well. Great dad stuff from Larry Miller. RIP Heath.

The Rip. This was a fun movie. Always good to see Matt and Ben together. As for the Siblings challenge, Affleck’s character’s brother is a minor but important character.

For Firsts I watched David Fincher’s feature directorial debut: Alien 3. It was okay, but didn’t come close to the first two in the series and Fincher would go on to make much better movies.

I went with To Have And Have Not. I have been digging into Howard Hawks movies since a collection of his films appeared on the Criterion Channel last month. I enjoyed this first Bogart and Bacall movie.

Train Dreams. There isn’t a lot of train in this movie but it’s there and right in the title. Also get a small but key plane appearance. As for the substance, this was a beautiful (and sad) movie both visually and in story.

Children of Men. A fantastic movie that begins in London. Also, the backdrop of the story (not the infertility but the rest of it) seems highly relevant in 2025 America.

I went heavy on this one. Kill Bill Vols. 1 and 2, Michael Clayton and the new Frankenstein. Enjoyed them all in different ways (including KB 2 being a shift from KB 1 as it’s more contemplative but wasn’t quite as much pure fun for me).

Marie Antoinette. Masks are donned at one point. A delight for the eyes, a modern take while having period dress and conventions, lots of interesting casting with no regard for accent consistency, and a shining portrayal by Kirsten Dunst. If you’re expecting much political analysis, look elsewhere.
