Is anyone else in Houston experiencing a lizard boom? My complex is Lizard Land - never in my life, y’all. There’s got to be multiple kingdoms, all positively thriving if population is any indication.
Shot of one of the lizards at my complex - they aren’t big, but they are many. Lizard is small, contrasting against the concrete, a bit more natural colored, more tan. It has speckles arranged in more or less even bands all the way down to the tail.

RIP to an absolute legend, National Treasure, and literacy advocate, Ms. Dolly Parton. She started the Imagination Library in honor of her father who never learned to read - just an all around incredible lady 📚 🎶

Houston’s Facebook Marketplace stays a fascinating place.
A Facebook Marketplace posting for Free Lemurs (of the “I like to move move it” variety). Pic is of what I hope to god is a group of lemurs with black and white striped tails at a Zoo or Rescue or is AI generated. Bird designed and painted to resemble a classic Whataburger building (with the teepee) - white with heavy orange accents

Yes! It’s a lot for Magnus, my dog of almost eight years, but they are warming up to each other. They make for super cute brothers!!

is anyone else getting diarrhea
Discussion
I saw on the news that people are going to the hospital with diarrhea from fruits and veggies. I tried to make a salad using a recipe I stole from hello fresh last week and today I'm having a hard time being hydrated and I am worried about if I need to go to hospital soon. my ribs hurt from vomiting but I think it could also just be the flu. I have not eaten at taco bell which they are saying is where people are getting sick from. i am embarassed to talk about this but I just wanted to ask if anyone else is not isnot feeling well.
thank you.
edit: recipie was for salad that involved big chunk of arugula lettuce and goat cheese and then chicken I think. any insight would help me thank you

Aka Pupper Pauper Pickle Pepper
Pic of Lucky today while trying on his 4th of July shirt. I caught him mid lick - tongue touching his nose - almost too adorable for words. He’s filling out nicely and his skin is doing better. He seems pretty happy, judging by the snorting and cuddling and goofiness verging into gremlin mode 😊

…which is, bien sûr, short for Lucky Portent the Pupper Pauper Patrice Justice Maurice Poocheaux ⚜️🐾
Lucky a couple of days ago in his jump suit, I mean harness, soon after scrapping with Magnus. Idk where he was before but this little dog can throw paws. He was so happy to be rid of that strap harness that he climbed up and nuzzled my neck when I put him in this one and clapped for him because he looks so handsome 🥺

Now “Lucky” is short for Lucky Portent…
Lucky a couple of days after I took him in. Thankfully, I had a cheapy, strappy backup harness that didn’t quite fit Magnus, but fit Lucky pretty good. He didn’t have enough fur/hair or natural padding to make it comfortable though. He is looking so serious in this pic because he only sits still when it’s treat time. (Which is of course Serious Business.) Normally he’s being all kinds of goofy or trying to taste electrical sockets or climb into the dishwasher or out the back passenger window I didn’t realize was down while I’m trying to park the car (!!!!)

Alright y’all: No microchip, and I’ve taken massive psychic damage scrolling through pages of lost dogs with no luck. Another dog makes zero sense for me rn, except for the fact that not keeping him just doesn’t feel like the move in my heart/gut/bones/soul. So, w/o further ado, this is Lucky.
Pic of Lucky the morning after someone dropped him into my patio. He appears to be a “poorly bred French Bulldog” per Reddit.

Lucky has the classic tall ears of the French Bulldog, a dark brown brindled coat, a not so squashed snout, and dark, beautiful eyes. He is far too skinny in this pic.

Y’all - I had just come back in from taking my dog out this morning. Was drying him off a little when we heard a noise outside. We both looked over to the patio and Magnus started growling. I saw a shape move and found this! I think someone straight abandoned this lil dog on my patio!!

Was looking through messages and found me asking the group chat an important question. My sister didn’t waste words 😂
Jul 19, 2024 at 12:06
Listened to a book called
Devolution about a first hand account involving contact with Sasquatch/Bigfoot (fiction) - it was good!
I now need to pose a question to the group:
You are given the opportunity to move to a newly built super
"smart" community in the Pacific Northwest wilderness.
The whole point of the community is to get back to nature while still being connected via internet and tech to the world. Groceries are delivered by drones and driverless cars, power from solar panels and methane from recycled waste, custom laid fiber optic cable for connectivity, there's staff to summon for maintenance and repairs, etc.
Plus, Seattle is just 90 minutes away on a mountain highway.I want to emphasize that this community is in the untamed
*wilderness* - before this community was built, there was nothing out there resembling civilization beyond hunting cabins and people living off the grid.
Assuming you would move there, my question is: Would you bring a gun?Assuming you would move there, my question is: Would you bring
a gun?

My student read “silhouette” last night (seemingly for the first time), and I just looked up the etymology. Did y’all know it the word comes from the name of a French finance minister in the mid 1700s? He imposed austerity to pay for the Seven Years War so his name became synonymous w cheap stuff!
Example of a silhouette of Goethe, a man in regency (esque don’t @ me) clothes seems to be conversing with the black outline bust of a woman. (The text below reveals it’s a grave monument). The word silhouette is derived from the name of Étienne de Silhouette,
a French finance minister who, in 1759, was forced by France's credit crisis during the Seven Years' War to impose severe economic demands upon the French people, particularly the wealthy.

Because of de Silhouette's austere
economies, his name became synonymous with anything done or made cheaply and so with these outline portraits.

Prior to the advent of photography, silhouette profiles cut from black card were the cheapest way of recording a person's appearance.

Simpson’s meme - a guy in a purple suite and salmon tie looking down his nose and the subtitle “Pathetic” across his chestThe researchers were testing a key theory: whether users would be willing to believe what the Al was telling them regardless of accuracy, in what they termed a "cognitive surrender" that effectively overrode their intuition and deliberation process.

Reading When the Clock Broke by Jon Ganz and lol, Puke Duke. From the mouth of babes fr.
Pic of two paragraphs from When the Clock Broke by Jon Ganz

Text:

was oil that brought the Dukes to Louisiana. David Hedger Duke, David's father, originally from Kansas, was an engineer for Royal Dutch Shell who relocated his family to New Orleans after being stationed for a time in the Netherlands. Duke's father was a deeply conservative Goldwater Republican and a harsh disciplinarian, and his mother was emotionally distant and an alcoholic-probably not such an uncommon childhood of the 1950s and '60s. Duke was a lonely, unliked child—peers called him "Puke Duke" and refused to play with him. He retreated into books. In 1964, at age fourteen, he got hold of the Citizens Council newsletter and showed up at their office.

The Citizens Councils were formed across the South in the 1950s to oppose school integration and voter registration. The Greater New Orleans Citizens' Council was founded by "Judge" Leander Perez, who had been one of Huey Long's principal lieutenants and vote-getters.
(He was so effective at his job that he managed to deliver more votes to Long than there were registered voters in his parish.) Although his patron was assassinated and he was removed from the judicial bench for misconduct, Perez persevered. Dubbed the "Caesar of the Swamp" land" by the press, he established a dictatorship in Plaquemines and

Am I being too sensitive or is this a lil out of pocket? “You're either sharply attuned to the qualities that make for great writing, or a lucky guesser.” Tf does that even mean?
You preferred human writing.
You're either sharply attuned to the qualities that make for great writing, or a lucky guesser. Maybe you also noticed that human writing often includes some clunky phrases, like this passage from Cormac McCarthy's
"Blood Meridien," caused by the author's aversion to punctuation: "As well ask men what they think of stone."
A.I. used to make mistakes like these. But today's systems are much more fluid than their predecessors — so fluid, in fact, that finding grammatical errors or nonstandard syntax is often a hint that you're looking at a human's prose, not a machine's.

“increasingly elusive” bc it hasn’t happened or bc it’s not likely to happen? Or bc it’s extra not likely to happen bc of…what? The GOP’s stellar stewardship in TX and elsewhere? Or gerrymandering? Idk if increasingly makes sense. I do love his mother tho lol “Some ppl *need* trash-talking.”
For now, Talarico is running for the Senate, becoming the latest in a line of buzzy Democrats put forward to pursue the Party's increasingly elusive dream of winning a statewide election in Texas. But, as Tad Friend reports in the week's issue, Talarico is different from other Democratic standouts past and present. Part of it is his public expression of Christian faith—
Talarico is currently on leave from the Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary—but it's also the way he talks about elections and political life. "I'm not a huge fan of being against someone," he tells Friend. "A campaign based on love is more durable than one based on fear." Even his mother wishes her son would get his hands a little dirtier. "He won't trash-talk," she says. "And that's very annoying, because some people need trash-talking."
