Aches and Pains #Poetry #Poem
Aches and Pains by @kritigri-unbottled

Surely I am yet too young
For my bones to ache to the marrow;
Surely I am yet too young
To be this world weary, this heartsick,
This bitter at my lot in life.
I have not yet begun to live, it feels,
And yet I am crushed by the weight of my years,
My patience ground to dust by this city.
You will find my dreams in the pavement,
Hopes set deep in the concrete,
Trod flat, set firm by years of passage,
Duty smothering desire,
Fatigue shackling me to my fate.
Surely, it is not so bad as all that!
Surely - for reasons of this and that!
Tell that to my feet, my heart, my pounding head;
Tell that to my vast and rythmic dread.

Odyssey #Poem #Poetry
Odyssey by @kritigri-unbottled

Step by faltering step
I have made my way
From the warmth,
From the safety of this fire,
Into the careless dark,
Trading wishes for needs,
Aspiration for survival,
Soft voices of encouragement
Turning harsh, demanding;
It strikes me that this world
Only allows children their dreams,
Before shoving them out
Into that cold wilderness
And expecting them to thrive.
And so I continue, weary,
On this reluctant odyssey,
Never stopping long enough
To soothe my aching feet,
Haunted by dreams
I am not afforded time to pursue,
Ambition languishing, malnourished,
Far from those who would feed its flame.

Leviathan #Poem #Poetry
Leviathan by @kritigri-unbottled

Part of me is grateful
For the aches, the hurts, the pains,
The hollow longings and sleepless wishings;
Part of me is grateful,
For it is by the light of that burning candle
That I have charted these halls,
These chambers, this inner labyrinth,
And borne witness to the leviathan
That moves within me,
That wondrous, dreadful thing.

Inwardly #Poem #Poetry
Inwardly by @kritigri-unbottled

I live in dreams;
Step by careful step
I explore the corners of my soul,
Weaving a tapestry of mirth and joy
To wrap round my sleeping form,
And when I wake,
For I must wake,
I make do,
And attend to what is demanded of me.

Do You Hear Yourselves? #Poem #Poetry
Do You Hear Yourselves? by @kritigri-unbottled

Do you hear yourselves?
When you poison our skies
With your profit margins,
When you spew your sewage
Into our oceans,
Choking our wildlife
To bolster that bottom line,
Do you hear yourselves?
When you vandalise our galleries
With machine made tripe,
When you replace what moves us
With regurgitated slop,
And you dare to call it art,
Do you hear yourselves?
When you lie so loudly
Through smiling teeth,
Do you think you sound convincing?
For the good of the people,
For the good of the planet,
You surround yourself with sycophants
To drown out the noise
Of the billions who rightly loathe you,
Do you hear yourselves?
As you dance atop our burning world,
Praising yourself into the wind
For turning your paper money into crypto,
Who will bail you out
When the cost of your hubris
Brings us all to ruin?
Laugh it up while you can,
We all burn the same.

May also use this account to post episodes of my little solo self-reflection podcast. Recorded one tonight for the first time in a little while, because I've been a few weeks in trying to find the words for how I feel. open.spotify.com/episode/5dON...

In Absentia #Poem #Poetry #Grief
Your absence
Is a lifelong wound
That I have long since learned to bear;
So accustomed have I grown
To this hole in my chest
That I scarce consider it
In my day to day.

But every once in a while
Someone will poke me,
Not expecting the gap underneath,
And the whole world lurches
As your absence is wrenched
From the annals of history
And made present in the here and now.

This hole, this gap
Has been a part of me for so long
That I sometimes forget I was not born this way,
Not born incomplete,
Not born nowhere, to no-one,
But to you, and from you,
Inextricably bound beyond even death.

You are more than a memory,
More than the passing sentiment
Of an agnostic musing on the past;
You are present in my very blood,
And neither time nor death
Can sever that bond
So long as I draw breath.

What Will You Do Now? #Poem #Poetry
People keep asking me
What I am going to do next
Now that my job of nine years
No longer needs me.

I want to say,
I'm going to move into a little cottage by the sea
And spend my days cataloguing books,
I will earn 60k a year
And spend weekends watching crabs.

I want to say,
I'm moving on to bigger and better things,
For I have spent a decade honing my skills,
Biding my time until I can leave this place
And grow into my true form.

I want to say,
I don't know, but I'll accept this change
With all the patience and grace
That anyone would,
Because I am a capable adult.I do not say
That the tapestry of life
Remains as inscrutable to me
As the day I left school;
That the expectations of society
Are to me as daunting
As the violent machinery
Of a manufacturing line;
I do not say
That I am so deeply ashamed
Of my inability
To spin the clay of my life
Into a shape of my will
That I hide from the question
Whenever it is asked.

Stonework #Poem #Poetry
This place has aged;
Scars run deep through the cement,
Years of toil rending stone from stone,
Chasms bearing witness to our daily burdens.
Roots try to escape their confines,
Warring with dead pavements,
Tripping the descendents of their jailers.

This place has aged,
But it knows me well,
For I grow near as slowly.
These roads connect me
To near everywhere I have ever been,
As I have outlasted all weathers;
Time erodes, as it will,
But I am scarce altered by change.

I transform as a statue does,
Infinitesimally, day by day,
As rain beats upon my sculpted face,
Until, years from now,
One who knew me at my unveiling
May remark on how they could swear
My nose had once been more pronounced.

At least, that is what I tell myself,
As I watch the world rush past me
In a flurry of noise and fury.
But I was not cast from stone,
And this flesh protests
That I stay in one place for too long.

When I Am Gone #Poem #Poetry
Where will you find me
When I am gone?

Will you find me
On the lips of my friends,
On the breath of those I cherished?
In the sounds of their laughter
As they recount our memories?

Will you find me
In the pages of their journals?
In passing mentions,
In petty grievances
And unspoken feelings?

Will you find me
In the wind,
My atoms long since scattered,
Tousling your hair
From generations past?

You have found me once, already,
For here I remain.

Our Forebears #Poetry #Poem
What must the trees think?
Those ancient oaks which outlive us all,
Those pines which outlast nations.
Do they mark the passage of time
In spans between young loves
Carving their initials into the bark,
And the return of the tearful
To slash a mournful addendum?
Are the ever-changing seasons
And the transformations they bring
Naught but the space between breaths,
As the inflation and deflation of lungs?
How ephemeral we must seem,
Our every effort outpaced and overgrown,
Save for where we spend lifetimes
Beating it back, suffocating vine with stone.
What is it all for, the woods must wonder,
These creatures born with one foot in the dirt?
They come and go and think for all the world
That yesterday is just a story,
But we saw, we see and remember.

If you go and sit beneath a tree,
And let go of all your daily urgencies,
You might catch a glimpse of the world
As they do.

How To Be Seen #Poetry #Poem
How To Be Seen

If I could sing these words,
Pains reaching into high harmonies,
Love and anguish reverberating
From my chords, from my lungs,
Would you stop to listen?

If I could paint you a picture,
Whisking grief into a storm
Of blacks and greys and blues,
A tiny ship on endless waves
Rocking dangerously beneath roiling clouds,
Would you stop and look?

If I starred in a play,
And acted as a conduit
For someone else's soul,
Calling upon my own lived experience
To transform myself into someone new,
Soliloquizing solemnly upon a moonlit stage,
Would you see me, and pause?

Or if I just told you how I was hurting;
How I needed someone, just to listen,
Just to hold me close and tell me
That it was all going to work out,
That I was enough,
Would that be okay?
