Going through a box of old stuff. I definitely used to be…uh…”cool.”

Uzbek restaurant opened in Dayton, which is amazing (both the food, and that fact that an Uzbek restaurant opened…in Dayton).

As recipients, I can’t say enough how much we _loved_ reading the monthly book to our child and how much she benefitted from it. Our little learner’s growing love of reading is certainly due in no small part to these books.

This whole thread, but this comment especially pushed me to get tickets to the September show in Cincinnati; I’d seen Blues Traveler and Spin Doctors play in Boise in the late 90s and as integral a part of my 90s child they were, honestly hadn’t thought much about them since. Glad for Bluesky, lol.

Have kid, would agree. Small child and I spent the afternoon reading actual books at the actual library yesterday. Not a screen in sight.

Just *one* time I would love any one of the myriad of paid activities I put my child through to end 5 mins over time instead of 5 minutes early.

I don’t read Spanish but I won’t let that get in the way of reposting Central Asian dumpling content. 😋

Here’s what happened when some teenage girls dared to compete in the dangerous sport of “kok-boru.”

Made “Samarkand Plov” from Caroline Eden’s Samarkand cookbook, but doubled the meat and didn’t add the cayenne, to effectively transform it into плов по-казахски, much to the delight of my Kazakh dinner guests.

Apparently this is the *only* vinyl record sold at *any* of 4 Meloman stores in Almaty, so I am now the proud owner of 1 from of a 200-copy pressing. Probably the fanciest record I own and certainly the most expensive.

It will take some time to work up the courage to do so! I also want to check out Omega Music in Dayton, which I definitely know is where actually cool people shop for their LPs. Maybe one day lol.

My child (with mom’s help) gifted me a fancy record player for Father’s Day, so I can really lean in to being authentically Middle Aged (tm). But, so far, said child has only allowed us to play the K-Pop Demon Hunters soundtrack on it. 🎶🎶🎶🎶Gonna be, gonna be golden. 🎶🎶🎶🎶

“Just enjoying some stuff” aligns with what I remember from reading John Bodnar’s Remaking America years ago, about how the bicentennial celebrations were received by the general public.

I got the same result, and the lack of foreign language classes as a choice was almost enough to make me stop playing.

I can confirm that there ARE a lot of places in Dayton that look haunted. I lived in a smaller rust-belt town before moving to Dayton and Halloween was perennially a challenge - “is this house abandoned or decorated?”

I gave up on my modest academic career ~3 years ago, and yet it brings me great joy (and wistful pangs of sadness) when scholars of repute continue to cite my little contributions to scholarship. Thanks, ResearchGate for letting me know, and Happy Friday!

I am continuing to wrap my head around the fact that here not just in preschool (which I thought was an anomaly) but apparently in kindergarten too, the teachers are Ms. FirstName and Mr. FirstName and so forth. Even in grad school I never moved past Dr. LastName for any of my interactions.

One of the coolest things my mom ever did when I was young was to stand in line at 6am at the Albertson’s Ticketmaster outlet to get 7th grade me floor tickets to this, my very first concert ever. $19, unbelievable.

Yikes. I’ve watched enough Paw Patrol with my child to have unironically and without advance planning stated that “no job is too big, no pup is too small,” when describing the services my office offers to senior colleagues in a professional meeting.

My child gnawed off a keycap or two from an old Apple Bluetooth keyboard we had given her at six months or so, and it was only happenstance that I glanced at her to discover them stuffed in her mouth before she attempted to swallow them. YMMV of course.

What I've been noticing lately in convos with students is that they *despise* the AI-slopification of everything as much or even more than I do. And yet our universities & their admin seem to believe that students for some reason want it integrated into everything. THEY DON'T.

Surprisingly, my child made it to level 9 of the game she invented, forced me to play, and didn’t share the rules for, whereas I only made it, apparently, to level 4. 🤷
