It’s still in beta, so I’ll keep building new features over the coming weeks (next up: seeing friends’ paper reviews), but I’m really excited to bring this into the world! I’ve always loved hearing about my friends’ research, and it’s fun seeing what people are reading and getting excited about.

(4) As a user, you can control what exactly is visible, with private collections, and choosing which shelves to display. (5) You can also make shared collections with friends; any paper added here auto-syncs to the shelves of all users- perfect for group reads or collaborative projects!

(2) For papers you've read, you can track what you liked/disliked about them, and give them ratings. You can also sort papers across into sub-collections based on different projects you're doing! (3) By adding friends' usernames, you can see a social feed of what your friends are reading.

Marginalia is full of features to streamline your trails of academic papers, and see what your friends are up to. Think of it as GoodReads but for papers! Here's some features I think are cool - (1) Look up papers by doi or title to add them to three shelves - read, up-next, and to-read.

Using BlueSky has helped me find so much incredible research, but also caused my to-read list, a bunch of open tabs, to balloon in size. So I built a widget to track papers and share them with friends. Introducing Marginalia, a social reading shelf for academics! marginalia-papers.netlify.app

I was interviewed by @plosclimate.org's Latitude blog about my PhD research and the nexus of climate change and ecology - where do we train our eyes, and what do we still need to know to think about the future of biodiversity? Thanks to PLOS Climate & @jamiemales.bsky.social for this opportunity!

New in PNAS today: we projected how climate change will reshape the body size of marine life across the entire ocean. 23,329 mollusc species, every ocean basin. The headline everyone expects is "life shrinks." The real answer is far stranger. 🧪 #marinelife www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

Nonuniform resizing of marine life under climate change | PNAS

Global warming is often predicted to drive universal declines in animal body size, but empirical evidence remains equivocal. This is particularly t...

My brilliant friends Saismit and Satavisha wrote an article for Times High Education about being a more effective and active ally to women and underrepresented minorities in academia! Synthesizing evidence across different aspects, they then trace out actionable steps as to what to do to address it.

It’s been a lot of fun working with Vasilis and Claire on this! We hope that the ClimLimits database will be a useful tool for physiological or macroecological syntheses of realized niche limits, and to assess how these limits may be changed or breached in the future. (4/4)

Here's a schematic of our computation technique featuring a hand-drawn Fennec Fox. (3/4)

A figure explaining the computation of species climate limits in the ClimLimits database, with the example of a fennec fox. Step 1 includes collecting historical climate records of temperature and precipitation and species ranges. Step 2 entails computing local climate limits as the most extreme conditions in each grid-cell, and clipping this to the species' range. Finally, the third step is to aggregate all local climate limits over the species' range and find the maxima/minima in 44 different limits to produce a final set of realized climate limits for the species.

We find climate limits for each species as the most extreme historical conditions experienced across several aspects of temperature/precipitation - maxima/minima at different timescales and thresholds, max. annual variability, and maximum frequency, intensity, and duration of extreme events. (2/4)

Super excited to share the first preprint from my PhD! In this, we couple species range maps with daily-scale climate records over the last 80 years to produce the ClimLimits database, a record of 44 realized climate limits for ~55,000 terrestrial and freshwater species. (1/4)
