In reading Joan’s memoirs, etc., it actually seemed like she upheld traditional gender roles. She also criticized “The Women’s Movement” as being petty IIRC. I don’t see her as a feminist (other than that she was a female journalist when most were men).

I lived in the south for many years before moving to the west coast. This is accurate. When I lived in Georgia, I was shocked talking to my fellow white women - usually white collar professionals - who basically vote GOP no matter what.
