The Department of Justice under the current administration has stated that jurisdictions which systematically obstruct ICE by refusing to honor detainers, limit information sharing, or prohibit local cooperation risk losing elegiblity for certain discretionary federal grants. These include Byrne Justice Assistance Grants & other law-enforcement agencies& public-safety funding streams that can support police operations, emergency services, and victim services such as rape-kit processing. The legal foundation is longstanding federal statute - particularly USC 1373 - which prohibits state & local governments from restricting the sharing of immigration-status information with federal authorities. Conditioning grants on compliance with existing federal law is not novel; previous administrations of both parties have attached conditions to federal $s.
The policy's stated purpose is straightforward: localities that receive federal taxpayer money should not actively impede the enforcement of federal immigration statutes especially when that non-cooperation results in the release of individuals with serious criminal records back into communities. Documented cases exist of criminal aliens released by sanctuary jurisdictions who later committed additional violent crimes, including sexual assault. The administration's position is that federal resources should not subsidise policies that increase those risks.
Cryer's framing inverts cause & effect. The administration is not defending rape kits because it favors sexual violence. It is asserting that cities cannot simultaneously demand federal funding for public safety while refusing to cooperate with federal law enforcement priorities that affect public safety. This guy enriched my life for 10 years. He really changed my life the day I had to say goodbye to him. 😭 I’d like to rescue another companion, but no shelter would let me adopt in my current circumstances, sadly. Soon, hopefully. And maybe 2 this time. 2x the trouble, 2x the fun, 2x the love.

That’s the plan, but right now my life is too much up in the air. I’m pretty sure there isn’t a rescue place that would pass me to adopt atm. But I miss my best buddy.
