I think he just knows the state he’s running in and the attitudes of the likely voters. Building a coalition is hard… bringing over the moveable voters is necessary work. And someone with good intentions like Talarico who is at least open to conditionally supporting trans women in sports

You mentioned “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and while it wasn’t a great policy it was miles better than what had been in place before and it gradually made the troops and the public comfortable enough to see its flaws and replace it with something better. That’s how change works.

I’m sorry but I remember the time when there zero protections for gay people in the workplace, in housing or even in your own bedroom. Those rights were won through a strategy of incremental change, pragmatism and achievable steps.

They’re not “made up.” They are real questions and fears that too many people in the general public feel. Are they being exploited by conservatives? Yes. And if they aren’t evidence based they won’t hold up to the kind of scrutiny that Talarico is suggesting.

no, i'm definitely not but i think the strategy is wrong. i think tangible gains in gay and trans legal rights are more important than social acceptance and "equality" because to the broader culture, we'll never actually be socially equal but we can be legally equal.

i would say that the current strategy of demanding a new definition of what a woman is and trying to force social acceptance rather than focusing on critical legal protections in housing, employment and personal safety has set trans rights back by a decade or more. which one of us is being stupid?

what he's doing is laying the ground work for more people to become more comfortable with trans kids playing sports. by invoking quantifiable things like safety and fairness which can be substantiated by experts in those areas he is opening a door, not shutting it.
