🌿🪨 #PaleoBotanyWeek Expanded character sampling inspired by a new Cretaceous conifer seed cone from California: importance of morphology in resolving relationships among the Cupressaceae by @kpfeiler.bsky.social et al. 👉 doi.org/q76b @kunhm.bsky.social @ku-eeb.bsky.social #PlantEvolution
An Early Cretaceous conifer cone reveals previously unknown morphological diversity within Cupressaceae. By combining fossil evidence with new analytical approaches, the study shows that extinct lineages had unique trait combinations, helping clarify the evolutionary history of modern conifers.

You are not going to want to miss Dr. Mihai Tomescu's Kaplan Memorial Lecture at #Botany2026, "Dead Plants Do Tell Tales!" Visit www.botanyconference.org for more information, and don't forget that the early-registration deadline is TOMORROW, April 30th!
Kaplan Memorial Lecture announcement graphic for Botany 2026. The background features a photograph of a Sonoran desert landscape at sunset with saguaro cacti. The Botany 2026 logo appears in the upper left, with the conference name, theme "Biodiversity at the Boundaries," and location "Tucson, Arizona" in orange and blue text to the right. A circular portrait photo of Mihai Tomescu, a light-skinned man with short gray hair and round sunglasses, holding up a large rock or fossil, appears on the right side. An orange banner reads "Kaplan Memorial Lecture" followed by his name and affiliation: California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt. A QR code in the lower left links to more information about Dr. Tomescu. The bottom of the graphic reads "Explore Botany 2026 at www.botanyconference.org."

For International Women's Day, let's pay homage to the great plant anatomist Katherine Esau. In her long career, she transformed our understanding of plant structure through her research and her very important books. She is my academic grandmother, advisor of my advisor.
