Not the point of the post, but this is how I finally discovered what a petard is and what it meant to be hoisted by one. I think I had always imagined a massive catapult, with a long looped rope attached, into which an operator's foot might stray prior to the moment of release. The reality: meh..

I was at Woking station many years ago when someone was trying to raise funds by shouting 'Help blind children!' I thought about responding: 'You hold them down, I'll poke them in the eye.' But obviously I didn't.

...SINATRA, so where has it been hiding for literally the whole of my musically cognisant existence? Gorgeous piece of work, FWIW, especially if you want to stretch the ‘Choosin’ Texas’ break-up theme to a whole album about marriage, divorce and male magical thinking.

Yes, I was actually aware of Ella Langley's ‘Choosin’ Texas,’ thanks for asking. (Not my thing, but admire the craft, etc.) What I had not heard of before this week was Frank Sinatra’s 1970 concept album ‘Watertown’. I thought I was pretty across popular music of that era. And it is by FRANK....

I wrote a bit about this in my book, pp. 240-52, though the evidence base was patchy. It may have improved since and there may be a more recent study. Folks at the Army War College were helpful in sharing materials.

Well, that sucks. But if they do ever actually invite you, you should go. Cuckfield is quite charming. My dad's ashes are in the church graveyard. He was determined to end up there.

It's real. Or at least real enough to have posters out and about when I pass through on the way to my mum's. Cuckfield is very much how it sounds. Some good cafes. You might like it!

narrow streets lined with small houses, their front doors immediately opening out into foot traffic. In the mode of 17th century Dutch art, the passer-by is offered a furtive glimpse of private space. Paid due homage to the grave of Vermeer in Delft Old Church....
The grave of Johannes Vermeer: a simple stone laid into a church floor, with the dates 1632-1675 A floral arrangement marks the spot.

Returning from a restorative couple of days in Rotterdam and Delft. The first city: a fascinating laboratory of urbanism, energy and movement, modern architectural statements everywhere you look, but with a commitment to family friendly public space too. Delft: picture-postcard pretty, canals....

You might try John Maiden's work. Not specifically on the Conservative Party, but good on the evangelical/charismatic Anglosphere in this period.

Thanks both. I wrote a bit about this here: www.jstor.org/stable/pdf/2... At the time I wrote the piece, I don't think there was a book of the kind you are looking for. There may be something more recent, though

Area man informed by daughter, on day of her graduation, that she cannot travel to ceremony without elaborate bouquet. 'I have 30 years' experience in UK academia,' he comments. 'When did this become a thing?'
An elaborate bouquet, purchased at short notice but thankfully just in time.

Well, that's another HOTCUS annual conference over. Things are pretty shitty in UK HE at the moment, but the quality of the work presented at the conference was really very high. And everyone looked fabulous too.
A group of c. 70 historians stand cheerfully on the steps outside the Samuel Alexander building at the University of Manchester. They have had a good day, but are now in the mood for a drink and some food. Some idiot suggests they pose for a photograph.

Off to the 2026 HOTCUS conference at the University of Manchester. Looking forward to seeing old friends, learning about new work and riding one of those famous buses. Will it feel like the future?

A rare public airing for the Oliver knees today. Apart from that, Lords is looking glorious.

Also (sorry, but honestly) if I had to make a list of places cis men couldn't go to because a cis man had made a women "uncomfortable" there, it would be very long and there would be literally nowhere for men to go.

We may be a little later than some, but it was lovely to be at my cricket club this evening to see our first ever all-girls side take the field in their debut competitive fixture. The girls played amazingly well, only a few practices in. Many thanks to all those who helped us get to this moment,

Spent much of the walk thinking about this in the light of the Supreme Court decision yesterday. John Roberts grew up in a nearly all-white community in Klan-haunted Indiana. We may not have fully grasped how much that world shaped him, how close it still feels to him...

Then, reading a historic marker about the 1960s, I was punched in the face by the following sentence, lurking in the middle of a paragraph: 'In the latter part of the decade, Dr. George and Barbara Henderson became the first African-American family to purchase a home in Norman.'

Had another walk around town this morning prior to departure. Thrilled to see one of those mile-long freight trains roll past on the single line track down towards Fort Worth.

I've also really enjoyed my trip to Norman. The Fred Jones Jr Museum of Modern Art is really stunning: very strong collections, imaginatively curated, beautifully displayed. The red telephone boxes scattered around campus, imported from the UK, add an agreeable element of quirk.

Not shown, the campus's thriving population of squirrels.Luis Jimenez's Mustang (Mestano) (1997) in the Fred Jones Jr Museum's Western art gallery. The horse rears up, its fibreglass construction and electrified eyes, glowing red, make it look like a cross between an animal and machine. An alternative vision to the Ford Mustang.

Also, it is currently raining very hard in Norman, Oklahoma, and I did not bring reliably waterproof shoes. Deferring European-style flaneuring for a couple of hours.

Once travelled to Fort Worth to work at the NARA office 9 miles out of city centre. Thought I would take bus from downtown to end of line and walk the rest of the way. Nearly died of heat stroke. Also tried to walk to the stockyard district and was stopped by the police for suspected vagrancy.

I didn't get to sit next to him and interrogate that hierarchy because the flight was cancelled just before boarding. A standby ticket and two further delays later, I'm pleased finally to be on my way to Oklahoma City. It's been a long day.

Ah, the romance of travel. Rough descent into Chicago this afternoon. Quite a few people puking. Buckets on the concourse at O’Hare to catch water from its leaky roof. At gate for onward flight, someone was wearing a ‘Guns, titties, beer & freedom’ t-shirt.

In a conversation, really struggling to follow what the person I was talking to was saying about the history of modern art. Turned out they were confusing Pablo Picasso with Rosa Parks. (!) It was a huge relief when we finally realized what had happened. But I'll never get those twenty minutes back.

It was lovely to hear the highlights of her repertoire again, gracefully performed, though I would have added the incredible ‘I Remember Joe' from her 1977 debut album and deleted ‘From a Distance’, from the set, my memory and the world, forever.

There were more than enough great and good songs, Griffith's own and songs she interpreted better than anyone else, to fill out the show. I remember seeing Griffith play a number of times from the late 1980s,

Human thinks: 'Right, going out to a gig this evening. Just enough time to walk the dog round the park, collect and eat pizzas from the local van, and get to the venue for the start of the set.' Dog thinks: 'Excellent moment to discover a dead rat in the park and roll around its carcass.'

Thanks, Alex. The feedback from my IHR session was really helpful, as was the suggestion in a workshop with colleagues from @historyatsoton.bsky.social that I should engage with the Victorian interest in deep time: hence the Crystal Palace dinosaurs....

The screening of Project Hail Mary I attended suffered from a visible grid of white dots throughout. We were handed refund vouchers as we left. But still, a good warm-hearted buddy movie set in space, blending The Martian and ET. If cinemas are going to survive, this is the kind of film they need.
