In second place, it’s Stephen T. Stone with a comment about J. K. Rowling threatening to sue Amnesty International:

Transphoba destroys an otherwise normal person from the inside out. It is a brainrot that rips apart someone’s soul and replaces it with a hatred so unyielding and all-consuming that it damn near becomes that person’s entire personality. God, imagine actually hating trans people because they’re brave enough to take charge of their fucking body and live in it the way they want to live in it. Imagine being that much of a motherfucking coward.

I HAVE BEEN AROUND LONG ENOUGH TO KNOW HOW THIS WORKS
I have worked all my life. I served my country. I have paid into the system, and I am currently dealing with my own absurd PIP process while another government department already recognises damage to the same bloody body.
So I am not particularly interested in being lectured about how lucrative disability apparently is by someone whose evidence base begins with, “Well, my mate knows a bloke…”
If somebody is committing fraud, report them. If the rules are wrong, argue for reform. If the system wastes money, expose it. If government policy is shit, challenge it.
Those are adult conversations.
But endlessly pointing at imaginary maximum totals and shouting “they get loads” is not a serious argument. It is just another way of making somebody else’s hardship about personal resentment.
And that was the part I was talking about from the start.
Not PIP in isolation. Not Universal Credit. Not housing support. Not council tax. Not whether some mythical cunt in Dudley has worked out how to rinse every department in Whitehall while driving a Range Rover to Tenerife.
The mentality.
That strange instinct to look at another human being whose life has been altered by illness or disability and immediately ask whether they might be getting more than us.
That is the bit worth examining.
Because if the first reaction to someone losing health, mobility, independence or a career is to start counting their money, the problem probably is not sitting in their bank account.
It is sitting in our own fucking head.

THE SWAP TEST
There is a very simple way to expose how ridiculous the jealousy is.
Take the money, but take the whole package with it.
Take the spinal damage as well. Take the MS, the stroke, the neurological condition, the chronic pain, the reduced mobility, the fatigue, the medication, the hospital appointments, the job that disappeared and the independence that quietly went with it.
Take the nights where sleep is fucked because the body will not settle. Take the days where something as ordinary as shopping becomes a fucking expedition. Take the awkwardness of asking for help with things that used to be automatic. Take the uncertainty about what the future looks like when the body has stopped playing by the old rules.
Then have the payment.
All of a sudden it looks rather less like a jackpot.
That is the psychological blind spot in these arguments. People isolate the thing they can see and compare it with what they have, while excluding everything they would not want in a million years.
Nobody envies the condition.
They envy the number.
That is a very different thing.

AND YES, BEFORE SOMEONE BURSTS A BLOOD VESSEL, FRAUD EXISTS
I know.
Everybody knows.
Benefit fraud exists because human beings are human beings and some of them are dishonest bastards. Tax fraud exists too. Insurance fraud exists. Companies hide money. People fiddle expenses. Landlords bend rules. Employees steal. Politicians have occasionally treated public money like the petty cash tin at a stag do.
Where there is money, somebody will eventually try to game the system.
Fine.
Investigate it. Prosecute it. Recover the money.
I have absolutely no interest in defending someone who is deliberately committing fraud.
What I do object to is the lazy leap from “some people cheat” to “everyone receiving support is probably taking the piss”.
That is intellectually fucking feeble.
One dodgy claimant does not make every claimant dodgy any more than one cowboy builder makes every tradesman a crook. We understand that perfectly well everywhere else in life, yet benefits get mentioned and suddenly nuance is dragged behind the bins and battered with a shovel.

THE MYSTERIOUS BLOKE EVERYBODY KNOWS
Every benefits argument eventually produces the same character.
Nobody has ever quite met him directly, but everybody knows somebody who knows somebody who knows him.
He gets PIP, Universal Credit, free rent, free council tax, a Motability car, three holidays a year and apparently enough disposable income to frighten a Premier League footballer.
He is always “a bloke down the road”, “my sister’s neighbour”, “someone my mate works with” or “this woman I know”.
He is the Bigfoot of British welfare.
Nobody can ever give the full circumstances, because that would spoil the story. It is much more satisfying to reduce everything to “they get six hundred quid a week” and leave out the inconvenient detail of why the person might be receiving support in the first place.
That is how these conversations go wrong.
People do not compare like with like. They compare their wage with somebody else’s entire support package, while quietly forgetting the illness, disability, caring responsibilities, reduced ability to work and all the other unpleasant shit bundled in with it.
That is not analysis.
That is envy with a calculator.

THE PART PEOPLE KEEP REMOVING FROM THE SUM
What interests me is how quickly the actual person disappears once money enters the conversation.
A human being can spend thirty or forty years working, paying tax, building a career, raising a family and getting on with life, then one diagnosis, one accident, one stroke, one degenerative condition or one knackered spine changes the lot. Suddenly work becomes difficult or impossible, everyday tasks become negotiations, independence shrinks, plans change, relationships change and life gets smaller in ways nobody fucking ordered.
Then someone on Facebook looks at all of that and thinks, “Yeah, but what are they getting a week?”
That is the bit I cannot get my head around.
The pain is invisible, the fatigue is invisible, the embarrassment is invisible, the careers that quietly disappeared are invisible, and the constant mental calculation around what the body can or cannot manage is invisible. A weekly payment, however, is nice and concrete, so people latch onto it and start doing pub mathematics as though they are auditing the Bank of England.
Suddenly there is no person, only a number.
And once that happens, resentment is easy.

A repost of a share of a post on FB, in a number of parts 1/
FOR THE HUNDREDS OF CUNTS STILL ARGUING WITH SOMETHING I NEVER SAID
I have now read so many versions of “yeah but people on PIP get other benefits and their rent paid” that I’m starting to think the real national emergency is not welfare spending, it is reading comprehension.
The original post was not complicated. I was talking about the absurdity of people being jealous of somebody receiving disability support. That was the point. I was not claiming PIP is the only benefit in Britain, I was not suggesting nobody gets help with housing, and I certainly was not announcing that benefit fraud had been solved overnight by the power of one sweary Facebook post.
Of course some people who receive PIP also receive other support. Circumstances differ because human lives differ. Some people can work and some cannot. Some rent, some own their homes, some live alone, some have partners, some have savings, some do not, some have caring needs and some do not. That is why the system has different forms of support with different eligibility rules.
Yet the comments keep arriving as though someone has uncovered the fucking Rosetta Stone.
“But they get other benefits.”
Yes, Derek. Some do.
That still does not make disability an attractive financial plan.

As they deleted their post, here's a screen grab of it. Labour are doing their best to get me to vote green next time as the only option left to me.
Skeet by Antonia Bance MP
"Because it isn't fair. Lots of my constituents could not afford to stay in a hotel for a week's holiday, and they are furious that people who haven't paid in get free hotel rooms. Plus a nation state having control over its borders is basic state competence - but we don't."

In kitchen news, the test of the pie for solstice was accepted. Notes have been made on what I did different from the recipe (Pie Room, pg 179). A larger version will be created in a few weeks time.
Circular pie ready for baking, a dome of pastry covering the filling, crimped around the base and with pastry leaves on the topDome savory pie, with a couple of slices taken out, the filling can be seen slowly dropping out. A knife to the left.
