I pray that you always return to me to refresh my memories of how you giggle, of how you stand on your tip-toes to kiss me, and how you so tenderly stroke my hair. I must believe that you will, or go insane. And until you do return, I will not wash the scent from these sheets. And I will remember.

The transience of memory, combined with the scarcity of things worth remembering, utterly terrifies me. I live in fear that I will one day forget the feeling of your skin, the sound of your voice when you laugh, and the things you used it to say to me. I remember them as often as I can.

I've spent my entire life listening to sad love songs. What are the odds you are the one to finally give me a reason to be happy? Can I afford to be hopeful without an ensuing disappointment killing me? I have no choice but to try.

My bed still smells like her. It wraps me in a warm, reassuraing embrace. I close my eyes and feel her hair under my hand, the heat and the tremble of her skin, the whispers she spoke to me. I am still terrified of love, but too in love to ever run from her.

At least we tried.

Love is the hardest thing we'll ever do. We don't even know what real love feels like, to be awash in the glow of another person's radiance. Only brief glimpses through the deep, cloudy sky. We try and we fail, we try and we fail. At the end of our lives, I just want to be able to say that we tried.
An alert buck deer stands in a clearing, dwarfed by enormously tall trees, and framed by verdant leafage, vines, and shrubbery. The forest is his domain.

Loving you is loving myself. Despite my scars, I contain within me an endless well of compassion and affection, and I wish to bathe you in its glow like a healing salve. But I cannot reach you. You as ever elude me. The answer is right in front of us both, but we cannot reach for it.
A night sky of rolling violet clouds stretched out endlessly overhead, as below the glow of a streetlight illuminates a single tree, the rest remaining shadowed in the imminent darkness of the night.

The familiar feeling of coming down from a bender, a blurry days-long span of my mind being freed of your grip, only to feel you settling in again, relaxing into the armchair at the head of my consciousness, making yourself at home. It happens more often than ever lately.
Turning leaves and empty branches lean out over a wide, flowing river. The entire scene is bathed in warm afternoon sunlight.

When we were younger, we used to sit here, royalty atop the richest throne. You bade me to be your king, and you my queen, and for us to watch over this quiet river bend until it eroded away into nothingness, and for one summer our dynasty would rule the land.
A crude wooden bench, supported on two wooden planters and atop a plank platform, overlooks a vast river bend, and the host of varied foliage that hugs it's sides.

When I see her shrink away, my mind cries out to me, begging me to embrace you. It demands I grasp your shoulders, pull you close against my chest, to hold you tight for the entire evening. To inoculate you against your fears. To pour over you all the love you gave but never received in turn.
The sun sets on a wide, lazy river, shadows obscuring the back and foreground. A rich shade of gold paints the sky.

When the vast earthen wells that are your eyes meet mine, I notice that they contain every inch of your soul. All of your passions and fears, all of your love and your pain. And when they meet the floor again, I see the little girl inside you, afraid, as she shrinks away from the world.
A worn two-lane road continues straight on into the distance, accompanied by a single weary power line, and flanked on both sides by turning autumn trees and overgrown grass.

I remembered the feeling of your lips today for the first time in years. It was here that it happened, where we stopped on the way home from the airport. No one kisses me the way you did. Every action you made was rich, steeped in love. The softest of your kisses felt like the whole world.
Bright, gleaming midday sun beams across a wide, calm river. The surface of the water glimmers through an archway of branches and leaves.

There is a terrible tragedy in letting go. One day, invariably, I will begin to forget you and you will no longer burden me. But one day long before then I will forget the sound of your voice. And even if I live to be one hundred years old, I will never hear that melody again.
The afternoon sunlight bursts through the trees, illuminating the overgrown grass beneath them in heavenly strips. The scene wears a dozen beautiful hues of green and yellow, contrasted against glimpses of the clear blue sky.

The worst thing about adulthood is not when things don't work out. It's when we both know that they can't. Voluntarily letting you go tears at my chest worse than any blade, it boils my blood, it sends my head to fits. I need to pour my love into you, even knowing that it will destroy me.
Leafy vines wrapped around a tree trunk turn an incredibly vibrant shade of red, almost pinkish, as they bask in the evening sunlight, contrasted against greens and yellows from the trees around and in the background.

I wish you had known me when I were softer. Before life had warped me, turned me grim and cold. I wish you'd known the kind boy, full of love and endless humor. Before he learned distrust. Before he hesitated before love. Before the grief drove him insane. I wish you'd known me when I were softer.
A duck standars proudly on a smooth river rock, perfectly positioned on an outcropping between visible currents to survey his kingdom without being swept away. Behind him, a messy thicket of weeds and woods present an impenetrable wooden wall.

This is the eighth time this week I've stopped by to mourn you. I wonder if you can even tell I'm there? In this place where you first told me that you loved me, I thought your spirit would settle here. I never believed in God, but now I understand: anything is easier than accepting you're gone.
Fading sunlight illuminates the canopies of tall, skinny trees. They're contrasted against the verdant green bushes below as the forest leads off from the road.

You used to volunteer on the weekend. I'd make dinner before you got home. At the table, we talked about our childhood. In the kitchen, we practiced dancing. Under the evening sunlight, we made love. Tonight, we both sleep alone.
Looking up from a flat, grassy base, the camera sees a rushing whitewater waterfall in the center of the frame, flanked by trees of brown, green, red, and a bank of vibrant pink. A rock cairn, about four feet tall, stands to the right.

Time has made me into a wretched creature, one overflowing with love. Few things are harder to share, and it rots inside me like a cancer when left unexpressed. Any goal is in my reach, any fate open to me - save for the one I was made for. I was born to love you, and it's the one thing I cannot do.
Out the window of a speeding car, verdant trees blur together mixed with golden evening summertime sunlight. The smear warm of colors cotrasts against cool, pristine pavement speeding past.

You used to tell me you loved when I'd stroke your hair. You used to say you wished I could've met your parents. You used to sing how you loved the sound of my last name. You used to tell me how nobody had ever made you feel loved as I did. I haven't heard anything new from you in a while.
Dark daytime skies with scattered clouds look down upon a flooded river, gorged on stormwater. The river rises nearly to be even with the bank, and broken trees lean and lie covered in moss and other foliage, so dense as to appear as if a jungle.

As long as I exist, you will always be loved. It's been years, and I still remember how to order your coffee. I still remember all your sisters' names, the smell of your hair, and the way your green eyes would gleam in the sunlight when you smiled at me. As long as I exist, you will always be loved.
A slow-moving river flows on around the bend, from which it will continue for miles. Dark, wet rocks dapple the river and surrounding shores, and tall trees spring up from the ground. Only a little further back, a hill rises, with the trees catching the golden evening sunlight on their leaves.

The love is still here, even if you aren't. What do I do with it all? I can't give it away, it has to be earned. I can't destroy it, it builds up inside me like a poison. I can't use it myself, I have more than enough for the two of us. The love is still here, even if you aren't.
A tree turns golden and red towards its tips and upper branches, contrasting against an evergreen standing tall nearby, dwarfed in size by the turning tree's closer perspective. The sky between them is crystal blue, cloudless, and clear.
