i also think intent is not binary. the depth of intent when an artist decides to publish slop approaches zero relative to the "apparent fidelity" in rare cases i won't begrudge someone for slopping a thing that *isn't* their art: a gamedev vibing their website HTML/CSS (but not the img/copy)

linear regression doesn't refer to a single algorithm does it? i think "least squares" is the simplest/popular "scatter plot line-fitting" algorithm, and from cursory overview it might be very similar in shape to your dot-product-magnitudes, except perhaps referencing a mean rather than each other?

oh certainly if optimizing polygons pulling vertices *is* an integral part of your hobby, then certainly no tool that circumvents that is a good tool. for me, as a programmer who enjoys the "concept art -> 3D model" as an amateur 3D artist but not the mesh optimization step for use in games, tho...

it would have to be some other type of machine learning than LLMs -- genetic algorithms and their branches have been an area of study for these types of graph-node problems (circuit layouts) for a long time in practical spaces independent of LLMs, even if analytical algorithms are still WIP

i would say a rare legitimate application of modern machine-learning tooling are some of the automated geometry solvers to reduce polycount for convex meshes without harming the final silhouette (preserves artist intent wholly). obviously best run before UV mapping

bruh i can't believe how close to the wire i got with my RAM upgrade last year

yeah, reasonable distinction - that's mostly what i do for any llm-code that ships to prod - i want to call it something like "robocop-coding" (being the cop to the robot) and the output like "engineering-manager-ware", but that's all a mouthful

i vibe-code literally only to test the capabilities of a new model/harness. i spec-code for one-shot internal tools or scripts. i step-code almost everything else. since ~6 months ago, i have handcrafted basically nothing about ~3 months ago, step-code output surpassed my handcrafting level

keerthik @korc.me · 12/07/2026
i think it's time to evolve the lingo around LLM-assisted coding. here's my framework: vibe-coding -> spec-coding -> step-coding -> handcrafted ...in order of how broad, imprecise, or minimal the human input is. the outputs, respectively, are slopware <- bugware <- vagueware <- software

you do have to trade out intellisense for non-MS-sanctioned versions for each language you use, but it's good!

i recently migrated my personal IDE of choice from VS Code to Codium. it has been extremely pleasant and highly recommend to stop being bothered to enable AI features, sign in, update *every damn day*, while still retaining 99% of your features by copy-pasting settings/keybindings.json

i miss when i only got email from people genuinely wanting to collaborate, ask for my opinion on something i have experience with, or friends reconnecting after a while. most of my inbox is straight to trashcan nowadays

i call this the "Y=Z principle" "if you have two independently developed software tools using a cartesian coordinate system identical in principle, at some point they will be contradictory in practice" which i learned when i needed to bounce between unity, unreal and blender in the same week

have we picked terminology for folk who loudly label media as genAI when it hasn't been disclosed? 📢 I nominate "slopcaller" 📢 - a "good" slopcaller is someone with a low (<2%) rate of false positives - an "aggressive" slopcaller calls anything AI-generated, harming real artists and their work

this might be my programmer bias, but i feel like these fall under the set of 3D objects that are easier done with physics-inspired vector/shader code than mesh files

sadly, I don't think there have been any meaningful spec updates that would speed up OS switching if you got a spec'd out gen1 model (the one i have). your best bet is just making sure it's plugged into power so the mobo/CPU/SSD bus doesn't enter battery-efficiency mode when you boot up/reboot

my entire life, i have been a certified "mainstream" consumer of almost any media art except video games and anime — music, lit, movies, tv (EN) this past year, i started scouring the global music scene for lyrical masterpieces referencing topics EN music skips — i now claim hipster cred here

my friend got me a gatcha bullet-train engine from JP, but it looked sad on display with just the single bogey, so i decided to put it in a tunnel!
a small toy train (engine only) made to look like it's emerging from a dark tunnel which is drawn on a whiteboard behind it.

it feels weird to be extremely one foot on one foot off the genAI bandwagon. i have a visceral revulsion to genAI when it rears its head someplace i sought human connection (personal comms, art, music) or in slop meant to sell me things (ads and marketing copy) but in code...i like it? 😵‍💫

my experience in keeping various moving parts in my head at a high level at once while letting coding agents deal with the nitty gritty helps me identify what's gone wrong faster and feel equipped to direct debugging efforts across systems.

it's such a weird time to be alive. as a ~generalist software dev, i always mildly regretted not being a specialist (and thus more valuable to the field and industry) rather than basically a "glue things together guy" who could be swapped out today that's all backwards

tangential to the meme, i concur that game devs starting a serious project lean towards UE over Unity simply because they dogfood their tech as a serious part of their business, and Unity doesn't seriously try to sell a game made with Unity

if you catch "i should get on adderall" followed some random amount of time by "i should take my adderall", then for a few clicks you only have one bubble available, important or not, and only after you click it does a new one come on (related tenuously to the previous one)

i get their desire to control the cashflow of the entire ecosystem given they practically birthed it (since the oculus acquisition) -- but it would have grown much more healthily if they let other players have incentives to grow the ecosystem rather than be subjects within it

meta kind of crippled the VR market despite putting so much money into it, by not doing any of the following: - open sourcing the shipped OS - enabling sensor access to devs - simpler app screening than apple - leaving successful apps without copying or acquinuking their business

yeahhh...i happened to be passing through grand central on the first day of lockdown with it looking like this during "rush hour", which is surreal for any new yorker. the next month i walked by medical tents in central park. in 2021 i moved to a place a block from Bellevue hospital. COVID was *bad*

nearing endgame of E33, and can confirm that it blew hades 2 out of the contest for 2025 -- to be fair though, i don't think a sequel can ever truly compete in an honest GOTY race for me unless it's far more dramatically reimagined than hades 1 vs 2

if we managed to divest the monetary incentive from the creation of art, artists could work on what they thought was nifty, instead of what would "sell" we could stop making the trillionth breakup song, christmas romcom, and hero's journey RPG plot and make truly beautiful things /end rant

keerthik @korc.me · 23/12/2025
if artists had food/shelter/dignity *without* transactional consumption of their art, we could *all* have art, and we could all *make* art corpos wouldn't have the incentive to make it cheaper, and thus no incentive to burn piles of cash to automate it
