The discovery of the sea route to India in 1498 was this explorer's greatest accomplishment. On his return to Lisbon the following year, he was given a triumphant welcome by the monastery's founder, King Manuel I.
The present-day tomb was made in 1894, using the typical forms of nineteenth-century revivalist nationalism.
In fact, in recovering some of the features associated with the late Gothic/"Manueline style", the sculptors Vitor Bastos and Costa
Mota decorated the tomb with ropes, vegetal motifs and various heraldic devices evoking the Portuguese Discoveries.
Inscribed on the tomb's base are the year of its completion and the name of its
benefactor.
