Completing the presidential visit to Eswatini was strategically necessary, even if the way was not ideal. Not breaking through would have set a precedent. It will take some time to process the role played by Germany and Czechia in enforcing China’s attempted diplomatic blockade.

It was interesting to hear PM Carney talk about middle powers working together, instead of picking sides. Now that China is threatening Canada unless it stops sending MPs to Taiwan and ships through the Taiwan strait, it’s time to see what that looks like.

Without clear planning and sustained coordination with the US, Taiwan will struggle to keep pace with China’s advances and regional stability will suffer. More critically, failure by Taiwan to skillfully manage internal political contradictions will weaken Taipei’s credibility and reputation abroad.

Taiwanese people want to believe in Trump. Our pro-democracy media mostly covers him in a positive light. But his comments on Greenland, Canada, and Panama, remind us of the uncertainty that comes with Trump 2.0. He may not mean it literally but we should take it seriously.
