A black and white photo of a big bare tree on a foggy day. It has irregularly shaped and angled branches and is much larger than the trees around it. It looks like it could be some kind of forest spirit.

This is reminding me of when I was young and saw a TV ad for The Shining. I'd just read the book, and was excited, but I somehow misinterpreted a brief over-the-shoulder shot of Nicholson lurching through the snow as some sort of loping creature and it absolutely terrified me (and lured me deeper)

What you need to understand is nothing we built was “off the shelf.” Store-bought environmental assets for stop-motion features do not exist. We were given concept art and told “make it look like this.” Everything you see here, down to the dirt and moss, was meticulously designed and crafted.

I see a lot of posts from Gen X folks talking about us being feral kids, drinking water from a hose, staying out all day unsupervised, and a lot of that rings true, but there's often a sort of gloss that colors that. Things could also be hard, lonely, boring. I just don't want to lose sight of that.

Sometimes, when I remember my Mom, I think of that bell sounding, how the house would smell, warm and inviting, dinner already on the table - nostalgia. I didn't know then that my folks were unhappy with each other, I just lived in the 'now' of a kid with wheat in my hair and scrapes on my knees.

Each farm had its own bell and each Mom had their own rhythm, so we'd know immediately. "Aw, I gotta go..." and start trotting home. Our bell was a big triangle, our neighbors had a sort of steel plate. I remember even our dogs would respond to it - you could hear them thundering through the brush.

Farm kid storytime: Even though our farm was fairly big (400 acres), we happened to live close to a couple of other farms that just happened to have boys my same age. We'd roam the fields and forests playing until sunset, when our parents would call us home using dinner bells (way before cellphones)

My cousin and I were terrified of using the thruster at first, just stayed centered and slapped the 'hyperspace' button in desperation when we were about to get hit. Took us weeks to get used to flying around the screen. I can hear the sounds in my head now - the panic induced by the creeping tempo.

Asteroids was the first arcade game I had access to, and it was the most mind-blowing at the time. It seems so simple these days, but back then, in 1980, it was unlike anything I'd ever played before. It was the only game in a nearby taco shop, and I spent a whole summer there, one quarter at a time

I was tinkering in my garage today when I saw a small shape moving & thought 'Oh no, one of the cats got out', but then I saw it was just our resident bunny paying me a visit. It seemed curious about the space and me, sniffing everything for a while, then gave me one last look-over and hopped off.

I remember that thread. My contribution: "Here in Seattle, there are no planes in the sky. It's a surreal scene, a quiet clear blue sky with no planes, contrails, helicopters or sound.
