Some of my notes & book portions, mostly from the seventies and eighties. Mid nineties, I started to go digital, but, as evidenced by the notepad, never 100%. 💙📚🖋️⏳📚 #booksky #literaryfiction #historicalfiction #fantasy #mythology (retelling)
3 large archive boxes, size 19" x 15" (48 cm x 38 cm), full of notes & a notepad showing the outline for the next novel heavily annotated in red and green. No spoilers as: 1-it is the first page of the outline, and 2-the font is too small to read on the pix.

The idea of a fluid, never-finished text is an academic luxury. In the real world, deadlines and endings are what force writers to grow. Is an endless draft art, or just a cop-out? 💙📚🖋️⏳📚 #ShouldersOfGiants #CraftSkeptic #booksky #literaryfiction #historicalfiction 1/2

Butcher's binary scene rules turn storytelling into a predictable, mechanical exercise. Why ban quiet, character-building moments that don't shift tactical goals? 💙📚🖋️⏳📚 #ShouldersOfGiants #CraftSkeptic
Jim Butcher

Faded background: Washington Park, Chicago. Derelict shops, puddles, stacks of garbage bags.

Stephenson's defense of digression is self-indulgent. Constraints exist because human attention is finite. Why ruin narrative momentum with endless technical lectures? 💙📚🖋️⏳📚 #ShouldersOfGiants #CraftSkeptic

Bujold downplays outlines, but writing without a solid macro-plan is highly inefficient. If you rely purely on scene texture, how do you avoid dead-ends and pacing collapse? 💙📚🖋️⏳📚 #ShouldersOfGiants #CraftSkeptic

Eco says the author must die to let the text stand alone, but this ignores the value of context. Why dismiss the author's background and intent as a layer of meaning? 💙📚🖋️⏳📚 #ShouldersOfGiants #CraftSkeptic

Le Guin's carrier-bag theory sounds nice, but conflict is the actual engine of narrative interest. Without clear stakes and a climax, how do you prevent the story from feeling flat? 💙📚🖋️⏳📚 #ShouldersOfGiants #CraftSkeptic Notice the use of em-dash. I guarantee UKLG was not using AI. #StopAISalem
Ursula K. Le Guin
Quote: "The standard narrative arc—exposition, conflict, climax, resolution—is merely a reproductive metaphor. We need a carrier-bag theory of fiction that holds things rather than just hitting them."

Page 11 of "What is the colour of purple?" A tale from Takuan's life, by Kohōpeh. Available as promotion on BookFunnel and SotryOrigin from July 1st.
Text:
A second monk eventually appeared and
offered to guide me to the abbot. We walked
through two gardens — one raked to geometric
perfection, one apparently in the middle of
being redesigned, with several large stones
sitting in irregular positions surrounded by
contemplative silence — crossed a covered
walkway, and arrived at a low building from
which issued a sharp, not unpleasant smell
that took me a moment to identify as brine.
My guide slid the door open without
knocking. He announced, with the tone of a
man reporting a minor atmospheric condition:
“The government scribe is here.”
Then he left.
I stepped inside.
The room was small and extremely
functional. There were no decorative scrolls on
the walls, no vases, no cushioned dais.
