Did you know there’s an election coming up in November? It's true! So, this week, I spent a few minutes writing about voting because I had an interesting conversation with @mattlangdonspeaks.bsky.social about Australia's compulsory voting and it got me thinking. arikohen.substack.com/p/rock-the-v...

Rock the Vote
This is the time of year when it’s not clear whether I’m completely overwhelmed with tasks or I’m suffering from writer’s block.

I sat down to write a piece about the importance of voting and why we ought to be trying to find ways for as many citizens to vote as possible, but then my daughter and I went to see Benson Boone in concert and I decided to write about that instead.

We’re back to school, with the first week behind us and the second week underway. And that return to campus is something that always leaves me a little breathless, not just because of the shifting of focus to the students, the meetings, and the event planning; it’s also just so *nice* to be back.

“Fascist Legacies” and Conversations about Liberal Democratic Values

Don't worry, self-promotion isn’t really the theme of this post. I wanted, instead, to write about what happens when you publish a book that looks like this and includes the words “fascism” and “far-right ideology” in the title.

So, with that in mind, what should we learn from the way that heroes are portrayed in “Supergirl,” “The Odyssey,” and “Spider Man: Brand New Day,” this summer’s trilogy of superhero movies? Read all about it: arikohen.substack.com/p/summer-of-...

It’s been a great few months for people who love movies and who also teach and write about heroic behavior. With multiple summer blockbusters devoted entirely to the superhero—either classical or contemporary—I’ve taken some time to think through how these portrayals line up with the research I do.

One of the strangest things about contemporary politics is that many people who support authoritarian politicians seem at least as unhappy about the state of their country as the people who oppose those politicians, and sometimes they appear even more unhappy than their opponents. What gives?

It’s basically impossible, as a parent, to know whether the fun and interesting plans will seem fun and interesting to the children you’ve dragged along with you. So I’m happy to report that two days at Jamestown, Colonial Williamsburg, and Yorktown were generally well-received by the whole family.

Building Strong Communities

While national politics are the focus of so many activists and so much of the media landscape, and while we’re told that each international conflict is the central moral concern of the day, local engagement is actually hands down the most obvious way for people to make a measurable contribution.

I don’t think it’s a stretch to claim that the contemporary media environment encourages people to devote an enormous amount of emotional energy to events over which they have little influence while neglecting opportunities for meaningful involvement closer to home.

But when every new conflict or controversy seems to be *the most* urgent and when so many problems appear global in scale, we often seem to forget the places, right in our backyards, where we can actually make a difference.

If you spend any time at all on social media, you’ll very quickly run into the claims that both sides are terrible and all politicians are the same.

If you spend any time on social media, you’ll very quickly run into the claims that both sides are terrible and all politicians are the same. The comment is delivered with a sense of confidence and finality: cynical detachment is the only rational response to contemporary American politics.

Happily for everyone the piece I wrote today isn’t a postmortem of anyone’s campaign. Instead it's about the way in which we treat elections like sports. One group of fans lines up with their “Red” banners and the other with their “Blue” ones, and there’s no crossing over from one side to the other.
