He's not quite sure why, and shrugs that wonder off to watch for signs he might need support.

"It does not sound so different from the town we recently left, though I imagine it somewhat larger," he muses. He catches the look Percy gives him. He might huff and harumph a little, knowing well he's being teased, but there's a strange sense of... content that settles over him, too.

I cannot imagine what happened on [your] world to cause [that] sort of creature to emerge. I don't think I've ever asked you about your homeland."

Using his first name is practically cheating. His flush stands out that much more in contrast to his beard. "I, eh.... ahem. I believe I referred more to the contrast you mentioned to their prey, but I take your meaning. So long as I- or... someone... might swat them without offense.

Alright. A few fair points, mostly acknowledging their role as food... at a certain size. Another deep breath. "...And if one were the size of a young child...?"

Deep breath. Focus on the beautiful, passionate man... "Perhaps you could explain the purpose played by a few of them?"

Thinking about bloodbugs.... and repressing a very large shudder to listen.

"It is not the outcome hoped for, but your heroics do not amount to so little, Percy. Such a blow to its sight must be an advantage to those who follow in your steps, and as you fought it, those it savaged had more time to run to safety, yes?"

"And yet, you stood against it. You still [acted] and didn't flee; that cannot be called a failure." He's never felt so unsure around Percy, and rarely with anyone else. His other hand hovers, unsure, before he lays it against a hollowed cheek, and his heart aches with unmaskable worry.

Instead, he swallows hard around the weight of his own pride and makes his attempt at the only way he can think to help. "I... I have to wonder if preparation could even have avoided something like this..."

with the beast for the chance to crush it beneath his hammer - the chance to save the man in his arms. But such a feat is long behind him now. He stands without means to regain the strength of his armor, and without it he could never hope to succeed.

When Percy's breathing becomes labored and Griffin hurriedly hobbles to sit on his bedside and support him, he's horrified by just how little weight the hand at his back must bear. And then his final words seal despair in Griffin's heart. He realizes suddenly that he would gladly go hand-to-claw

He'd seen a caravan hand once, as a boy, returned from a nearby hunt for salvage and ravaged by the barrels of waste his employer had unknowingly sent him stumbling into. Even the decline that had quickly led to the man's ghoulification hadn't caused so drastic a change in so short a time.

The faintest glimpse of the damage had winded him, earlier; this stills him entirely. The sight before him defies his limited understanding of what can and cannot be, and it is as if his mind wishes to replace what his eyes tell him of a body he's come to know rather well.

is nearly alien to his own ears. "A dragon, and a fight, but little else, and you departed rather suddenly after we had awoken that day. But I see no failure. I cannot consider what rumors I [have] heard and imagine less than the bold hunter, standing tall between the innocent and a great foe.

as the slumped form of the man before him. He searches, still, for some lingering shape of the vibrant man he'd seen just days prior. "I am glad you have had them at your side, then. It is not entirely clear to me what happened," he continues. His tone stays safely neutral, and the sound of it

His gaze shifts from somewhere in the middle-distance to settle back on Percy. His vision isn't what it once was, and it's hard to make out the finer points of his malady - but the hunter's eyes tell a tale he cannot hope to fathom. And they seem to him as hollow and dim

His hands fold over the handle of the cane, then adjust again. "I should say, I did not come to... offer more for you to bear. I wanted to see you, and see that you'd returned with my own eyes." This is certainly not the direction he'd intended, either. Nothing for it now, though.

He maneuvers the room with uncharacteristic care, sitting somewhat gingerly on the chair, lest it break. The commotion would be the last thing he'd want to offer. "I hardly believe entertainment should fall to [you] at the moment." That's... more glib a tone than he'd hoped for.

he was never good at infirmary visits. There's no reason he'd be better now, with a young man he barely knows. But he stops just inside and finally takes in the picture before him, a quiet swear leaving him in a breath. He makes no pretense, now, of [not] leaning on his cane.

The doorknob feels heavier than his hammer, small as it is in his hand. He has to duck to enter, of course, and that buys him a few more seconds to school his expression before his eyes meet those that match the answering voice. Even among the his brothers-in-arms,

A knock thunders against the door, no matter how gentle the gesture was intended to be. A heavy weight shifts from one foot to another - anxious, unsure, rather than impatient. @insectglaives.bsky.social

He draws away before Griffin can volley back, before he's really even found his breath again with an answer like [that.] So he waits instead, his smoking gaze openly following Percy's lithe movements. When he rises to follow, he forces himself to bear as much of his weight on his own feet

"You [should] know, first," he prefaces, "my mobility is not what it was in my younger years. Though [other] skills of mine have more than made up that ground..." ...And there's an insecurity there, certainly, behind swagger and a veneer that could be pushed over with a single careless touch.

And yet, half the fun was in drawing his eye, in drawing him nearer. For all his confidence, though, Griffin still blushed like a green recruit on his first leave when Percy's touch cast a shiver down his spine. He sets aside his drink, considering the offer, or pretending it [needs] consideration.

He lingers with his a while yet, still gauging how deeply it affects him - and perhaps needing a more persistent push from his earlier malaise. Another fair swig, and his grin already belies his next words. "Ah, is that so?" He leaned more heavily on the hand resting at Percy's back, murmuring,

His growing air of confidence quickly shifts to mild alarm. His hand raises to thump Percy on the back, but he thinks better of it. When he settles back, and in good humor at that, he lets the hand settle on the back of Percy's seat. And under such encouragement his smile returns quickly.

He looks a little longer, now, drinking in Percy's profile more readily with self-doubt set aside. "And how could it not," his rumbling voice carries between them, "with such a charming gentleman as yourself in their midst?"

"[That] is a true warrior's spirit: push on past any obstacle and you will doubtlessly reach victory. Comradery will come with time." Let others advise minute strategy or reason with his worries – the man beside him, to his assessment, needs encouragement, and perhaps a distraction.

scattering constructive thought to the ends of the room. He flags the young woman tending bar. "Two more, dear woman." In one bout, he drains his tankard and wipes his mouth upon his arm as it thumps down to the bar again. While they wait he slowly, carefully shifts his body to turn towards Percy,

But the brews in this tavern are far headier than the common remnants of the old world and cellar distillations of its successors, and even his hulking figure is unaccustomed to that strength. He finds his head swimming back to Percy's mention of a dragon,

Between the fantastical words pulled straight from the stories he obsessed over in his youth there's something familiar in a young man, ready for a fight against overwhelming odds but fraying under the pressure. He wonders, briefly, if he should share more of his tale.
