In 2018 or so we stayed at the Langham in Chicago and discovered on arrival that it was across the street from the Trump Tower. I had the strangest melancholy that I had never learned long distance spitting and couldn't arc a blob of saliva over Wabash Ave to hit the place.

Random thought: If they seized some supply lines long enough to refuel, could you even *run* a 1930s engine on unleaded fuel? Or would it take a few tankfulls to ruin it?

In the Terry Pratchett Discworld series (modeled very loosely on Medieval/Renaissance/Victorian England as needed for any specific joke) the ruler of the city orders the "Explorers' Guild" be renamed "Trespassers' Guild" under truth-in-advertising law. I miss that man.

One of my formative experiences was seeing a "CUSTER HAD IT COMING" bumper sticker when I was twelve. As a white kid from the suburbs, it made me realize that other folks' views were worth hearing out.

I read that Steve Martin, Martin Short, and some other Hollywood types (Tom Hanks?) schedule all their procedures for the same day and have a late night poker game and sleepover the night before. I think "fun" is the wrong word, but it definitely sounds like making the best of the situation.

Fred Phelps, one of the most vile homophobes America ever produced (and as an American, that's really saying something) was also a civil rights lawyer. They don't cancel out - he was still a POS. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Ph...

There was a TV show by Michael Moore where they put "Emmy nominated Yaphet Kotto" and a white guy who was a literal paroled felon on a street corner in NYC to see who could hail a cab first. I still remember one instance where the cab driver literally passed by Kotto to pick up the other guy.

Putting that many assets in one place, bumper to bumper in broad daylight, in a world with drones, missiles, or just *biplanes* is either: 1. A sign the opposition is completely without anything that flies. 2. The commander is an absolute moron. 3. This is AI. It can be more than one, of course.

Maybe, but I saw a more interesting (and likely) scenario. We train AIs on popular culture. AI exterminating mankind is a pretty common trope in SF. Therefore, the likeliest scenario for AI wiping us out is because it's doing what we *trained* it to do. Looked at that way, we kinda have it coming.

Children of divorce have a similar emotion. Often they blame themselves: "mom and dad would still be together if I was a better kid" This is absurd, but the logic is that they can somehow magically "fix" the divorce. But it never works. Cue a toxic cycle of frustration and self loathing.

Vaccines are too easy and effective for wellness types. A handful of shots, most when you're too young to remember, and everyone can be equally protected from disease. Denies the strenuous performance of class and virtue that expensive, time-consuming, public-facing wellness demands.

His Wikipedia article claims he grew to hate "Danny" so much that he threw it overboard while he was touring to entertain troops during WWII. There's a horror movie script in there somewhere but I can't quite get my head around it.

I'm used to thinking of "market price" is expensive. I never knew there was a tier above *lobster*! (Joking aside, when I worked on SoC products, the price list was a huge secret to give the company leverage in customer negotiations. So this is kinda expected in industry to industry deals)

I used to believe that too, but of late I'm not sure how true that is. Sure, Putin has pile of blackmail material, but I don't think he's ever used it. I honestly think that Trump believes being Pro-Putin is what's best for him and his cronies (the well-being of the USA is irrelevant, of course)

If so, then the statue I cited can't be the one used (the lack of the term "criminal tool" lends credence to that). So apologies for confusing the issue. The idea that using a cell phone to set up a crime is a separate charge is absurd... and exactly what a zealous prosecutor would do.

My gut reaction is lockpicks because they're still illegal in Ohio (toool.us/lockpicking-...). But that just seems weird. Looking at the statue ("any substance, device, instrument or article designed or specially adapted for criminal use"), it could be drug paraphernalia. But it just seems bizarre.

This is a silver bullet against most conspiracy theories. I made the mistake of arguing with someone online who said the B-2 Bomber (which I helped build) had an alien technology death ray. I pointed out out that was *less* effective than, you know, dropping bombs on a target. He never replied.

One of my dogs had to wear a Cone of Shame after getting some stitches. She used it as a weapon, jamming the edge into my other dog to bully him because of course she did. Once you account for tormenting siblings, the category of "tool using animals" broadens greatly.

I'm in both camps. An artist needs to accept that their work will be interpreted in different ways, many they never expected. With great art, that's almost inevitable. On the other hand, if I'd written "Born in the USA" or "Rock the Casbah" and they were used as war anthems, I'd be pretty pissed.

Update: I just read your profile and saw you're already in aerospace. My sympathies. Honestly, when I escaped that world for a brief decade, I really did see it was worse in most commercial shops. If you're in SoCal, I know of one exception. Let me know if you want a company name.

Throwing out ideas: have you looked at big aerospace or other govt contractors? They're underrepresented there, but it's better than the commercial world in my experience. (Probably a holdover from when we had at least lip service to equal opportunity)
