It's good to email them to let them know that's a real possibility. It might push up the process and at least let's them know your intentions.

Writing research is easier than publishing it
The author reflects on the challenges of submitting academic papers, highlighting the contrasting ease of writing versus the complexities of submission processes across journals. They encountered financial barriers, rejections, and administrative hurdles, particularly when addressing ethical considerations and copyright issues. Despite the difficulties, they have devised multiple plans moving forward.

Oh, its so frustrating right? The systems, and people, are just so overwhelmed.

All that to say, I have a plan and a back up plan, and a back up for the back up plan, but goodness is this taking up more space in my head than I'd like it to. #PhDProblems #IHateAdmin #AmIWellRoundedYet

Doing a compilation style thesis makes this even more difficult. I must publish at least one of my studies, I don't mind this at all (in fact I asked to do this!) the problem is with understanding copyright within journals. It's another administrative nightmare and y'know... ADHD.

When you're doing work with marginalised participants you also have to think about the moral alignment of the journal. There is at least one disability journal I know of which is known for it's "gender critical" harm.

What I do mind is the overly administrative process of submitting to different journals, including (but not limited to): Formatting Referencing styles Passwords and logins Cover letters Supplemental documents Anonymised scripts Funding statements Author contributions Ethical considerations

So I had to pivot. I was brave and went for a journal with a ridiculous impact factor. They desk rejected me three days later (I like the timeliness and appreciate the small amount of feedback given). I don't mind the rejection, our work isn't going to fit everywhere and that's okay.

However, I totally ADHDed when reading the (not so) fine print about application-process charges. Long story short: my university does not cover them for this particular journal and I do not have access to nearly £2,500.

Writing the paper seems easier than submitting the paper. I was really excited to submit the first paper from my PhD. I made a choice for a special edition which fitted the area of work and got the paper up together with co-researchers and with some oversight from my supervisors.

I sometimes go to writing retreats run by the university, my funders @scdtp.bsky.social or @writershq.bsky.social so I can make a good start on "big brain" work. Days can be different but this is the general feel of it.

Katie Munday @kmunday.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
In the evening I might get on with "small brain work" like admin, email catch-up, or other things that can be done whilst rewatching It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia for the 100th time.

I head off on the school run or get prepared for Little Man coming home with other family members. I swear about the washing I forgot to dry.

Recently I finished up admin for a paper I'm submitting - another 6,000 word paper about the first study of my PhD. I look at my "what's going on" list (a "to do" list is just too much of a demand for me!) and I work out the plan for the next day.

Katie Munday @kmunday.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
My diary is filled then scribbled over as I work out my time, energy and focus for the upcoming weeks. I stop for lunch. The next three hours are spent doing the original thing whilst being emailed, messaged, group-chatted and dealing with life admin and the washing I should have put out.
110
Katie Munday @kmunday.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I stop for a snack and a refill of drinks. I get back to emails, which always takes longer than I think. At the beginning of term there are a LOT of emails about upcoming events for the year. Some of are useful, some are not, some are useful but I can't go to because of other commitments.

Katie Munday @kmunday.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I'll have an idea of what I'm focusing on that day. So the first two hours will be focused on that thing. Recently that has been writing up my study two ethics application, with 15 supplemental forms. A large, well-thought-out, and heavily referenced document of about 6,000 words.

Katie Munday @kmunday.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I wake up at whatever time Little Man decides and we do the usual breakfast and self-care stuffs before the school run. This usually involves lots of talk about Bluey or dinosaurs. When I get back home it's time to do some housework, washing, washing up etc then a coffee.

A day in the life of a #PhD #student I am aware that most of my family and friends don't understand what I "do all day" as a PhD student. So, I wanted to share a day in the life of a PhD student. This is my particular experience, so I'd be interested to hear others experiences.

A really informative, non-judgemental and inclusive book. This book has given us loads of good ideas to try with our son. More than anything, it's given me the confidence to take a pause and try again at *our* pace, not at anyone else's.

One bit of advice for new #PhDStudents... Remember the PhD isn't your whole life - even if you are led to believe that by faculty. Your mental and physical health always comes first. You are allowed to enjoy the next few years of your life, your life doesn't get put on hold by studying.

Amazing trans masculine artwork at John Hansard Gallery. SOFT/STRONG by Net Ember. Over 75 trans+ people from across the UK have come together to share meaningful images of their lives, culminating in a public artwork that celebrates transmasculinity.

Text from window image:

"In the same way I always knew I was queer, knew was an anarchist also. I was born into a crashing, uncontrollable sea of rage and adoration for life, whisking me away from my more tempered and respectable peers, long before I had the words to describe it. An overwhelming sense of freedom that our supposed betters are desperate to legislate away, terrified in the knowledge that our chaos will be their undoing. My anarchism is as innate as my dancing gender and my tangled sexuality, to try and separate them would be like trying to sieve salt from the ocean and shoot stars from the sky."

I've had some great feedback on my work, individually and collectively, and that reminds me that what I am involved with matters. It moves the needle, it creates ripples, and more importantly to me it encourages others from my community to know that they deserve to take up space in research spaces.
