Before you build your world, figure out what it’s about. What makes this world different? What conflicts define it? What themes do you want your players to experience? You don’t need every answer. You just need your direction. #TTRPG #Worldbuilding #TalesOfTheValiant

The first mistake in worldbuilding? Trying to build everything at once Start with the big pieces What is this world about Where do people live What makes it different What conflict is brewing Build the details later Start with the foundation, not the furniture #TTRPG #Worldbuilding #GMAdvice

Dont start with the capital Start with the place your players will actually visit Build one settlement Give it a problem Add people who disagree about the solution Then connect it to the world around it You dont need a world map to start building a world #TTRPG #Worldbuilding #TalesOfTheValiant

Your world map should tell you where the stories are Start with major landmasses. Then add regions, mountain ranges, rivers, and coastlines Don’t fill every inch Leave room for places you haven’t imagined yet Build the map as your world grows #TTRPG #Worldbuilding #GMAdvice #TalesOfTheValiant

Sometimes your world needs a reset Not because what you built was bad, but because you’ve learned enough to build it better Alastax is getting a few updates. New material, refined ideas, and some things I’ve been sitting on are coming soon Time to rebuild #TTRPG #Worldbuilding #TalesOfTheValiant

If your villain needs a monologue, you built the wrong villain. Give players a choice where every answer costs something. Let the villain benefit from the price they choose. That’s a villain they’ll remember for years. #TTRPG #TalesOfTheValiant

GM advice: If you give your players a door, they will ignore it. If you give them a wall, they’ll spend 45 minutes figuring out how to get through it. Plan accordingly. #TTRPG #GMAdvice #GameMaster #TalesoftheValiant #DND5E

A memorable villain doesnt need a complicated plan They need a reason the players can understand, even if they completely disagree with it Give your villain a goal, a belief, and one line they will never cross Then make the players question whether that line matters #TTRPG #GameMaster #TOV #DND

Player agency means your choices matter. You don’t need permission to pursue the weird idea, change the plan, or take the story somewhere unexpected. The world should respond to what you do, not funnel you toward what the GM planned. What choice changed everything? #TTRPG #DND #TalesoftheValiant

As a small TTRPG creator working in the Tales of the Valiant system, I want your input. What would you like to see in terms of content? Adventures,Magic items, Player options, GM tools, Setting material? What would make you say, “I need that”? #TalesOfTheValiant #TTRPG #IndieTTRPG #DND5E

Hot take: Your players should be allowed to break your world. If every kingdom, faction, prophecy, and NPC has a predetermined outcome, you’re not building a world. You’re building a script. Leave room for your players to change things. #TTRPG #Worldbuilding #GMAdvice

Hot take: “My character wouldn’t do that” can be an excuse to avoid making a decision. Your character can be cautious, selfish, or scared. But if they never take risks, make mistakes, or change, you’re not playing a character. You’re protecting a stat block. #TTRPG #TTRPGCommunity #TTRPGPlayers

GM Hot Take: Your prep isn’t sacred. Stop forcing your players to experience it. Before each session, pick 1–2 pieces of prep you can cut if they stop serving the game. If the table loses interest, move on. Don’t force the scene. Prep is a tool, not a contract. #TTRPG #GMAdvice #GameMaster

Running an adventure isn’t about following the pages. Know what matters, then throw the pages away when players take the story somewhere unexpected. Prep the situation. Not the script. How do you keep adventures flexible at the table? #TTRPG #GameMaster #GMAdvice

Worldbuilding tip: Stop building places just to fill the map. Give every settlement a problem, a secret, or something people desperately want. That’s what turns a location into a place your players actually care about. #TTRPG #Worldbuilding #GameMaster

Hot take: Your world doesn’t need more lore. It needs consequences. Players don’t care about 10 pages of history if none of it affects the table. Build less history. Build more things players can change. What has your table changed? #TTRPG #Worldbuilding #GameMaster

The best improvisation trick for a GM? Ask yourself: “What would make this more interesting?” Players will surprise you. You don’t need the perfect answer. Turn their unexpected choices into something worth remembering. What’s your favorite improvisation trick? #TTRPG #TalesOfTheValiant #DND5E

Players, don’t be afraid to make the bold choice. The risky plan. The unexpected spell. The ridiculous idea that just might work. Those are the moments you’ll remember. Play your character. Trust your instincts. Make the story yours. #TTRPG #TalesOfTheValiant #TTRPGs

TTRPG creators: where do you find artwork for your books that isn’t AI? I know good art costs money, but as a new creator I’m trying to keep costs low while using quality, human-made art. Where do you find artists, stock art, or bundles? #TTRPG #IndieTTRPG #TTRPGCreator #RPGArt #IndieRPG

The best NPCs aren’t built around a stat block. Give them a goal. Give them something they fear. Give them a reason to care about what the players are doing. A memorable NPC should feel like they had a life before the party ever met them. #TTRPG #GameMaster #Worldbuilding

A campaign doesn’t fall apart because you forgot an NPC’s name. It falls apart when you stop managing the things your players actually care about. Track the consequences. Track the promises. Track the threats. The rest? Improvise. #TTRPG #GMAdvice #CampaignDesign

The best TTRPG encounters aren’t the ones with the toughest monsters. They’re the ones that force players to make a choice they’ll still be arguing about three sessions later. Combat is easy to balance. Consequences are where the fun begins. #TTRPG #GMAdvice #TalesOfTheValiant

Stop writing your players’ story. Your campaign should create problems, not prescribe solutions. Build the world. Set the conflicts in motion. Give your players something worth fighting for…then let them decide what happens next. #TalesOfTheValiant #GameMaster #CampaignDesign #TTRPG

Hot take: If your character choices never surprise your GM, you’re probably not making meaningful choices. The best TTRPG abilities aren’t the ones that make your character stronger. They’re the ones that make everyone at the table ask: “Wait… you can DO that?” #TTRPG #PlayerAgency #GameDesign

Adventure design isn’t about filling every room with something to fight. It’s about creating situations that give players choices, multiple approaches, and consequences that shape what happens next. Build problems. Let your players find the solutions. #TTRPG #GameMaster #AdventureDesign #GMAdvice

A good TTRPG puzzle shouldn’t require players to guess the GM’s thinking. Give them clues. Give them multiple ways to solve it. Let their ideas matter. The best puzzles don’t test if players know the answer. They test what they do when they don’t. #TTRPG #GameMaster #TalesOfTheValiant

One of the best ways to introduce kids to TTRPGs? Don’t worry about whether they’re “playing correctly.” Let them make ridiculous choices. Let them solve problems in unexpected ways. Let the story grow from their imagination. That’s the magic of the game. #TTRPG #GameMaster #TabletopRPG

Both Wild Beyond the Witchlight and Baldur's Gate use a 5 part structure of 3 open sandboxes, linked by multiple choice funnels, framed by an intro and conclusion for story cohesion. Richard Pett and I use the same structure in Fury of the Forsaken. It's a great scaffolding for #TTRPG adventure s.

In Tales of the Valiant, your reaction is a resource too Don’t spend it just because you can. Sometimes the smartest play is holding your reaction because you know the enemy hasn’t shown you their hand yet. Good combat is about what you do and what you choose not to do. #TalesOfTheValiant #TTRPG

The best TTRPG moments usually aren’t the ones the GM planned. They’re the moments that happen because a player says: “Wait… I have an idea.” Give your players room to surprise you. You might discover a better story than the one you had planned. #TTRPG #GameMaster #GMAdvice
