From President Lyndon B. Johnson to the Smothers Brothers, who had a popular, bold, and very funny political satire TV show in the late '60s. I'm old enough to remember it. They regularly skewered Johnson (Vietnam War era), and for all his faults, was elegant enough to respond thus.

(3) Maybe the 1st novel that made a big impression on me was 1984. I read it several times as a teenager. Orwell's nightmare was the fascism and neo-fascism the free world just defeated would re-emerge in a different form. As Margaret Atwood pointed out, the books actually provides a HAPPY ending...

(2) The narrative voice in Wm. Burroughs novels doesn't move toward emotional/spiritual health, for example. B is focused on larger social issues. In the novels of Andrew Vachss, the criminal narrators don't move towards being law-abiding citizens. V knew in his guts that would've been dishonest.

(1) Writing my novel WIP the only way it can. It doesn't follow all the novel writing advice available online. Big for example: the hero is supposed to be knowingly or unknowingly in pursuit of greater emotional/spiritual health. Yeah, that's not this story and this hero.
