Wow, this had a lot more emotion to it than I thought it would have when I first started reading it. Sean loves in a way Marcus never will. Guys like Marcus are in it for the fun and excitement and when that's over they're over you, but they sure can make you feel alive while it lasts. Nicely told bittersweet vignette!

Maybe it's corny (it's definitely corny) but there's something very satisfying when the end of a story calls back to the beginning and brings a nice close to the emotional arc. It's even more satisfying when it happens organically and you don't have to force it. This just fell onto the page for me.

A few weeks ago I picked up the Mammoth Book Of Erotica and I'm thinking I might start a blog series where I read through it and do a little analysis of each of the stories in it. I love talking about the craft of writing and this feels like a nice, no pressure way to get back to smut.

Finally trying my hand at writing some sleaze

I opened the door without checking the peephole.

She was maybe twenty-five, twenty-six. Dark hair cut at an angle that made her cheekbones stand out like accusations. Eyes the colour of good tequila. Lips painted the kind of red that knows exactly what it’s doing.

“Nico Vale?” she asked, like she didn’t already know.

“Depends who’s asking.” My voice felt rough, unused. I hadn’t talked to anyone but the liquor store clerk in three days.

“I’m a fan,” she said, the smile not quite reaching her eyes. “Delilah.”

“I don’t do autographs.” I started to close the door.

She caught it with a hand. Her nails were bitten down, not what I expected. “I was at your show in Chicago. The Fireside Bowl? 2017. You wore that leather jacket with the tear in the left elbow. Played Wreck Me as an encore.”

I paused. Something wasn’t right. “I never played Wreck Me.”

“No,” she said, letting out a laugh like broken glass. “You were too drunk. The guitarist covered for you.”

Off The Record
The sea was louder than she’d expected.
Clara paused at the edge of the narrow cliff path, the wind tugging strands of hair loose from her messy bun. Below, waves broken against the jagged rocks with a violent almost-rhythm, the crush and crash relentless and unyielding.
The house sat above it all, perched like a defiant thought atop the rocks, half weathered wood, half crumbling stone coated in fading whitewash, looking almost as though it had grown out of the ground rather than been constructed upon it.
She pulled her coat tight against her chest, clutching it closed at the neck to keep the worst of the wind out, and began to climb the slick steps. The hand holding her coat shut was freezing, the fingers beginning to numb as wind and spray beat down on them. Her other hand was buried deep in her pocket where it clutched the small recorder. This was just another assignment, another interview like all the others. Sure, this one was with an eccentric recluse with a reputation for throwing people out and shipping them back to shore, but she’d handled worse in her time.

The steps were slick with spray and she was forced to pick her way up them carefully. As she gained height the ocean fell away beneath her, a flat expanse of slate grey, the mainland just out of sight beyond the horizon. Somewhere behind her the boat was going back to shore, where the man she’d paid to ferry her out here would wait until evening to come back and fetch her again. The thought of being stranded alone with a mercurial artist didn’t thrill her, but sometimes this was the job. And whatever happened, at least she’d get a story out of it.
The door of the house opened before she had a chance to knock, before she’d managed to straighten her hair and neaten herself up from the climb. One long lock had plastered itself to her face, strands clinging to her lips and the tip of her tongue, and it was into her attempts to extract this from her mouth that Elias Vant delivered his greeting.
“You’re early,” he said, standing barefoot in the doorway, paint on his hands, his shirt buttons open down to his sternum, revealing curls of silver hair over tanned skin. He didn’t say hello.
“You said to arrive at morning light,” she said, spitting to try and dislodge her hair. Not the first impression she had wanted to make, but it was what it was. “You were very clear on that.”
He looked at her for a long second, as if trying to decide what sort of trouble she was going to be. “In which case, you’re late.”

Even in the ostensibly silly stories I just really like finding these little quiet character moments

They lay there in silence for a long moment. Dani stared at the ceiling, counting the crack in the paint, hyper-aware of every inch of space her body occupied - or didn’t. James let out a long breath beside her and she felt it more than heard it.
“I didn’t think tonight would end like this,” he said, quietly, with a rueful sort of laugh. “I thought maybe we’d play some drinking games, maybe you’d finally let me beat you at Mario Kart.”
“Never going to happen,” she said, smiling despite herself.
“Yeah,” he said, and when she turned her head to look at him, he was already watching her. She flushed, suddenly glad of the dark. “I know.”
