I very much enjoyed attending The British Pain Society conference this week where I had the opportunity to present a poster about our project investigsting autistic experiences of period pain, specifically how transformative the Patient & Public Involvement work at the start of the project was :)
Research poster titled "The impact of patient and public involvement (PPI) when designing resesrch into autism and period pain". The poster covers the background context, the PPI methods and group structure, what feedback was given, and the implementation of this feedback within the project, including different types of pain data collection and space for qualitative elaboration, additional topics (eating disorders / sleep) being included in topic guides, the creation of an audiovisual participant information sheet, and the use of gender-neutral images on the study adverts.

Let me present the Spoon Illusion 🙂🥄 This has been in the works for over a decade when we were just goofing around testing sound localisation in my in-laws' kitchen... But we finally managed to do some reasonably controlled experiments on this. #psychscisky #neuroskyence doi.org/10.1177/0301...

Right, so I was asked to take a look at this headline and as you can imagine, there is a lot wrong with it! 🙄 This was initially published in @thetimes and then picked up by the usual GB News, DM, Telegraph etc Let’s take a look….👀 🧵 1/26 (1/1)

Is interoceptive sensing unified across internal organs? 🫀🫁 Our high-powered psychophysical study (N=241) suggests not. Bayesian evidence indicates interoceptive processes are largely modality-specific—challenging the idea of a unitary interoceptive sense. 🔗 Read here: osf.io/preprints/ps...

We have created a little infographic showing 13 recommendations from our recent paper (doi.org/10.1136/bmjo...) about ways to improve the participant's experience when taking part in chronic pain research! It is often not possible to include all recommendations, but several are easily implemented!
1. Image of a person with a microphone, text saying "Advertise via community and trusted groups".
2. Image of books on a shelf, text saying "Detailed and accessible research information".
3. Image of a checklist, text saying "Clear information about eligibility".
4. Image of upward trend on a chart, text saying "Disclose potential for pain increase upfront".
5. Image of a mobile phone and an email logo, text saying "Contact details to discuss accessibility".
6. Image of a group of people, text saying "Approachable researchers, with lived experience".
7. Image of an academic hat and a hospital sign with a line through them, text saying "Informal and accessible research environments".
8. Image of a house and an online video call, text saying "Flexible, accessible participation options".
9. Image of 2 people, text saying "Facilitate attendance of a support person".
10. Image of an hourglass, text saying "Frequent breaks to reduce fatigue".
11. Image of one handing another money, text saying "Adequate compensation for time and travel".
12. Image of a clock with forward arrow, text saying "Explain long-term benefits or implications".
13. Image of a pen writing, text saying "Provide a lay summary of research findings".

A great paper discussing the impact that a lack of diversity has for research and the importance of responsible generalisation practices. Open science has come quite far, but the issues mentioned here need addressing, alongside understanding how open science can impact under-represented groups.

A lovely Christmas gift indeed! I love this paper as we learned so much about how to improve accessibility for chronic pain participants of taking part in research. (Many of the points raised are probably true for most participants). Great work @kirrraliseh.bsky.social! @yorkpsychology.bsky.social

A great early Christmas present! Our paper looking at things that make it harder (barriers) and things that could make it easier (facilitators) for people with chronic pain to take part in non-pharmaceutical research, but our findings extend to any chronic pain research involving people really!
