I was happy (well...unhappy that it had to happen) to see this. Writers already have a sense that tradpub is a pay-to-win business. Go to conferences, pay for pitches, pay editors, query package services, courses, contests, etc. Now the perception will be that pay-to-win is codified into the system.

The AALA is just wrong on this. While I believe the majority of agents will act ethically, the worst McAgents will monetize existing clients and non-clients with wink-wink-nudge-nudges pay-to-play tactics. AALA have really screwed up this time, and it's going to hurt both writers and legit agents.

As an aside to my aside, some agents might recommend a good editor outside their agency, and you'd likely have to pay for that editor's services, sometimes at a discount. I'm slightly uncomfortable with that in hrnrtsl, but it's not necessarily bad. As long as conflicts of interest are avoided.

Yep! An editorial agent is a nice bonus, but non-editorial agents will still know enough to get your book ready for sale. Some larger agencies also have in-house editors. (as an aside, an agent who expected their client to pay for these services would be a big red flag btw)

They're not really replacing editors, they're getting the ms ready to sell. What they're often focusing on is marketability, structure, pacing, etc. The acquiring editor will make the deeper edits. That's in general. Some agents are more editorial than others. Some really do full edits.

One thing people should know, is that it's important not to point out the scammers mistakes to them. This is how they learn, and become more convincing. If you reply to them that they used the wrong name, they'll correct that mistake for others. Better to leave them in the dark.
