"Raviween" Art Challenge: Day 3: Fae, feat. the dormouse For this one, I felt inspired by "The Elf and the Dormouse," an 1894 poem by Oliver Herford. #Art #DigitalArt #Ravioli

Digital painting based on a poem. It's raining. A dormouse is sleeping beneath a mushroom, and a faerie arrives, seeking shelter. The faerie, shaped like a ravioli, has snapped the mushroom in two, is seen flying away with the cap using it like an umbrella, leaving the dormouse soaked. There is green grass, a gray sky, and puddles. The dormouse in the image is brown to convey it is wet.

"Raviween" Art Challenge: Day 2: Familiar or Companion, feat. the sandhill crane. #Art #DigitalArt #Ravioli

Digital painting of a witchy ravioli riding atop a sandhill crane and holding onto their hat. They're looking back worried at the papers flying out of their messenger bag that's being carried by the crane. The crane—their familiar—is decorated with a headpiece and three necklaces. Two other cranes are in frame. The background is the sunrise over the sea, three clouds, and a forested mountain range with a lake. Stars are still out.

Thank you, Nopro! 💛🍂 I'm taking this challenge a bit more casually this year in that I don't feel pressured into "completing" it; however, I'm really happy with the art it does manage to drag out of me. And sometimes the stars align with the bonus animal fitting right into the theme.

I'm participating in "Raviween"—an art challenge unique to one Discord server. We must include its mascot ravioli in the theme, and optionally we can spin for a random animal. Day 1: Autumn, feat. the Eurasian blue tit. #Art #DigitalArt #Ravioli

Digital painting depicting three Eurasian blue tit birds perched on a small branch. The left one is holding a sprig of berries in its beak and the middle one is upside-down. All around them are ravioli-shaped leaves of various autumn colors and a few more berries. It's raining.

The story it tells is not too complex, but it does urge me to think about it. Say, at first one could see in it a heartwarming story about the birth of a family; or, is there a layer of tragedy and horror interwoven? It may come across almost as a cycle for unfortunate boatsmen, if you stretch it.

I borrowed The Red Turtle from my public library recently. This film is directed by Michaël Dudok De Wit in collaboration with Studio Ghibli, among others. As the only spoken dialogue amounts to yells, it relies greatly on visual storytelling. Its art is beautiful and demands your attention.

Returning to this. I thought the "Odyssey" film was worth the price of admission, though unsurprisingly it falls short of the epic poem for me. Above all, I enjoyed getting to share the experience with friends—plus catching a couple more friends in the auditorium, unplanned.

Beautiful rendering, Cravat. Your work's long been some of my favorite, and it's been such a joy to see how it's changed. We love Mio in this house. One more great detail is a certain someone in the back.

Dugtrio if they were three mozzarella sticks stuck together:

I am holding up three mozzarella sticks that were stuck together, their formation reminding me of Dugtrio from Pokémon. I drew Dugtrio's faces on them.

It was his first time on the bench. Above him: 135 lbs of pure hesitation served on two plates. He knew better than to do this alone. Finally Waldo sat up. He scanned the crowd of people in line to use the machines. "Can anyone spot me?"

"I don't own a TV," and they pull this out. But, yeah, no, I get you. Functionally, goddamn everything is a TV. Except your TV; that one is actually a billboard.

This reminds me of myself in high school: I thought it sounded smart to say I'd stayed up reading articles. It was Cracked dot com. 🤦‍♀️ On not watching TV, eh, they have their preferences. Lots of cord-cutters. Too many subscriptions. Other hobbies. Plenty of reasons. Bragging is weird, though.

Blade Runner is a fine answer. I like both, but truly it was the film with which I fell in love. My own answer to this Paprika. The novel by Yasutaka Tsusui certainly provides more context to some of the film's stranger scenes, though to my memory I found it a tad creepy? I prefer the animation.

I think anyone new to the epic—after they've familiarized themselves with it—should also watch "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" starring George Clooney.

I think The Odyssey is the more interesting of the two. I'd even based my Bachelor's capstone on it over a decade back. Made me happy to see its influence on Hades II. Whether or not I achieve this arbitrary goal, I'll still read them. Here's hopin' Nolan's adaptation will hit for me.

I've plans to see Nolan's "The Odyssey" this weekend with friends. Thought, hm, maybe I could reread both epics before then; it had been a minute, after all. Could definitely have read The Odyssey, but I may have bitten off more than I could chew trying to squeeze in The Iliad first.

I watched every film in the Evil Dead franchise last week and "Burn" this week. I'll spare you extended thoughts. Personal ranking: 1. Evil Dead Rise 2. Evil Dead 2. Evil Dead II 3. Evil Dead Burn 4. The Evil Dead 5. Army of Darkness №2 is not an error, and this list isn't definitive.

the magic she loves

an illustration of agott from witch hat atelier, as she descends alongside swathes of golden light against a sunset-like setting, her cape billowing behind her. above her is a sphere depicting the stars, the animals and their respective decorative sigils like constellations. two borders frame the central piece: in descending order, it depicts the tower of tomes and its connecting bridge, shelves of books and finally agott's desk in the atelier. on the left bookshelf, some of the spines form a young, lonely agott. on the right bookshelf, the spines depict the many faces of the atelier; coco, qifrey, olruggio, tetia and richeh.

One last, important note: There are short levels in between worlds that especially evoke Super Mario Galaxy or even Pokémon Platinum's Distortion World, which is to CAUTION anyone known to get motion sick. I was fine, but YMMV.

I think it's cute, colorful, funny, and approachable. At the same time, it has ways to put one's skills to the test. There's not one music track I wanted to escape from. All in all, if this sounds interesting to you, take leap on my recommendation.

I played the Nintendo Switch version onNintendo Switch 2 hardware, but the game is also on Steam and PS5. My game crashed twice—both times were while trying to enter a new sub-area. I was lucky not to be set back almost at all thanks to auto-save.

According to howlongtobeat, the main story of Big Hops can be completed in 9 to 12 hours. If you wish to see and collect everything—which includes side quests and challenge levels—your play time may take you over 20 hours. Despite enjoying myself, it felt to me like a long 20 hours. Take breaks!

For example: its worlds are more spacious, Hop's mobility takes greater advantage of the game's physics, its veggie "power-ups" are more so tools for problem-solving and exploration, and it is fully voiced by default.

During my time with Big Hops, I was often reminded of games as Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy. I see them in the movement, animations, and level design; however, I recognize it has its own identity.

Indie highlight: #BigHops 🧵 Developed by Luckshot Games, Big Hops is a vibrant 3D action-platformer in which you play as a young frog named Hop. Hop longs to see the world beyond his little forest, but as he soon discovers—"be careful what you wish for."

I moved my car into the backyard in preparation for tomorrow, and it felt like watching the credits to Police Squad the way it doesn't belong there. I parked neatly, but I imagined the car barreling through the raised planters and animals and our back neighbor rushing out of the way to that tune.

I'll be happy to see those fuckers off. I'm not about to cry for this tree, but it's understandable, right, to feel a little grief? It's a move which'll prevent other problems down the line for ourselves and our neighbor. It's gotta happen. To me, it's like a monument. "The house with the tree."

I think it's important, when able, to let autumn leaves be; however, I'm forced year on year to rake and bag if only because it's a sweetgum. IYKYK—those goddamn spiny balls are annoying! I'll not miss those. I guarantee they'll still appear, as if from a phantom limb.

This isn't the first tree with which our family has been forced to part (see: the ice storms of '07), but I've known it longest. I think trees are important and would like to plant smaller ones in its place, if possible once our lawn recovers. I'd also like a cross-section of one of its branches.

100 1

kirbybebop @kirbybebop.bsky.social · 28/06/2026

It's not like there aren't still trees in the area, but I think it will be noticeably quieter still without its chorus of leaves in motion and at rest akin to the tide. Birds won't sing here. None can take shelter. No person will be heard swearing because they hit their head on a low branch.

110 1

kirbybebop @kirbybebop.bsky.social · 28/06/2026

This tree's watched over our little neighborhood while we kids played, caught fireflies. I've memories climbing it and finding a place among the boughs to lie. I've scared trick-or-treaters from the same perch. Its shade is respite from a brutal sun. With us grown up, it's gotten quieter here.

110 1

kirbybebop @kirbybebop.bsky.social · 28/06/2026

About this tree: It was but a sapling when Mom had moved in. It's outside my bedroom window, so in all my life, it's been one of the first things I'd see when I start my day. I'll not be absent the golden light of morning through my blinds, but I'll miss how the leaves would dance in its radiance.

110 1

kirbybebop @kirbybebop.bsky.social · 28/06/2026

I'm in a sentimental mood about a tree of ours which is set to be destroyed starting tomorrow. It's reached a point its roots pose a foundational threat. Especially as we enter the summer season, I admit I'm a little anxious to be lacking its cover—for our sake and our local wildlife.

All through yesterday was the static of rainfall present o'erhead. I emerged to retrieve the mail at a lull, barefoot. I felt "grounded" by sensations underfoot and those sprinkling my head and shoulders, by the scents. I decided at the base of our driveway I'd stomp in a puddle—for old times' sake.
