I would never do this in real life. But, for some reason, in #BG3 , I always light candelabras that are leaning into things that would go up like kindling in the real world. LOL

For the past 2 years, beginning the year Lilley was diagnosed with leukemia, we have collected beanies every September for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. With the help of so many, we have donated nearly 2,000 beanies to children fighting cancer across Chicagoland.

I’ll admit that I hesitated to do it again this year.
Partly because our family has already received more love and support than we could ever repay. Asking for more felt almost greedy, especially now that Lilley has finished treatment.

But the bigger reason was that stepping back into that world felt too painful. Too scary.

We lived there for so long. We carried Lilley when she could not walk, tried to nourish her when she could not eat, and held her through days when she was too sick to simply be a child.

We did not cross the finish line easily. We crawled toward it, exhausted, frightened, and desperate to reach the other side. When she finally finished treatment, it felt as though our family could breathe again. So I hesitated.

But tonight, Lilley asked if we could continue Beanies of Bravery. I asked her why, now that she was finished with treatment.

She looked at Michael and me and answered with the simple innocence of an eight-year-old: “Because there are still kids fighting, and I want to help.”

She has every reason to leave that painful chapter behind. Instead, she looked back and remembered the children who are still there.
The children still sitting in infusion chairs.
Still losing their hair.
Still missing school, birthday parties, and playdates.
Still waiting for their turn to ring the bell.

What a privilege it is to raise a little girl whose first instinct after surviving her own battle is to reach back and help someone else through theirs.

This year, Lilley’s goal is to collect 2,000 beanies.
2,000 beanies for children fighting a battle they never asked for and never deserved.
2,000 beanies for parents who would give anything to trade places with their child.
2,000 beanies for families holding on through some of the darkest days of their lives.
2,000 small reminders that say:

We see you.
We remember you.
And you are not alone.
