PACER? That sucks, an amazing run. It's annoying when one loses because there are four different possible words with one letter variable, and you don't choose the right word. And it's annoying x 1275 with a streak like that.

Reminds me a recent piece by Emmelheinz: "AI is driving us to automate judgment at breakneck speed. And if we automate judgment, we lose our agency in political and aesthetic decision-making—which is what defines us as human beings (for better or for worse)." cultura.nexos.com.mx/ay-periodista/

"laughing in the face of calamity" is one of three essential rules for middle-aged happiness, according ro some article somewhere. my guess is this will be a baseline requirement to survive the Anthro-/Capitalo-cene writ large.

The Rip gets the job done. Fun fact: Damon said during filming for this Netflix film they had behind-the-scenes discussions about having to reiterate “the plot three or four times in the dialogue” to account for people being on their phones.

At this point it's sunk cost fallacy, and also (negative) freedom. See Oreske's and Conway's The Big Myth: How American Business Taught Us to Loathe Government and Love the Free Market (2023).

I liked it, too. It struck me how little we've seen masking as a theme in any films post-covid, as if a trauma too raw to represent. Eddington also pairs well with One Battle... There's a good analysis of both films at The Baffler. thebaffler.com/latest/ameri...

Pretty solid trip-hop madrugada mash. My non-AI generated "goes well with" recommendations would be "Love Me Sweet" by Kid Loco and "Ethnic Majority" by Nightmares on Wax.

The cinematography is quite interesting, often opting for long shots with a single camera and foregoing shot-reverse shots for dialogue. It turns up the immersive / engaging quality (for me at least).

Years ago Duck Duck Go was presented by the right as al alternative to Google, so this is no surprise. Ad Fontes Media remains the best way to determine media bias, reliability, and fact-based reporting. Stay within the green/yellow rectangle.

Congrats on the contract! I remember your mentioning it during UC Mexicanistas this past spring, so I'm very happy to hear it become official. I wanted to be the first one to congratulate here in bsky, hence no comment over there. This way, it feels more valuable or impactful.

I've noticed a lot lately - that the news reports on extreme weather but makes no link to anthropogenic global warming and its major contributors. No wonder there's such a disconnect and no action, and why I feel like we're frogs in a pot water with the heat turned high.

I've rewatched the whole series out of sequence to prep for pt 8, and really been enjoying them. With some overall misses, it really is the best action franchise (next to Bond) in a market diluted with mediocre-to-bad films.

I wholeheartedly agree that Trump + enablers are destroying the US and world post-haste. But to be fair, on CNN the world has been ending since at least 9-11-01, if not before. Maybe a screenshot of their front page is not the best proof of the Trumpapocalypse.

This sucks, then again, no expectation to converse. If the price comes down, I'd definitely take one every now and again. Wait - CAN we even choose to take one if these? If do, that's news to me. This must be a trial run.

We loved pretty much all of it, with the minor exception of the animation of the dog. For some reason the golden lab looked more two-dimensional, as if cardboard, than all the other animals.

Nice! They have a neo-psychedlic tinge that may not sit in your wheelhouse, although most of their music is very mellow. Another one in Spanish from here in LA is Angélica García, whose album Gemelo is quite good deserves more exposure.

Seeing as you are an oceanographer who studies climate, you might enjoy the novel Playground, by Richard Powers (2024). One of the main characters spends most of the novel underwater describing the ocean in great detail and with a sense of wonder. She's based on Sylvia Earle's life and work.

Thanks for sharing. The only album not your list that bears mentioning (in case it did not come on your radar) is Khruangbin's A LA SALA. It's hybrid all over, straddling the English-Spanish divide while donning an impressive array of musical styles from around the world.

By all accounts, it has been effective. Many incorporated technological fixes, but the most difficult ones to imagine seem to be the social, political, and economic transformations needed to stop killing the biosphere (and ourselves and other nonhumans) in the process.

It's why I study science fiction. In my Mexican climate fiction course that just ended, the final project was that student's had to write a letter to themselves from the future in 2074 (time travel conceit). And, in essence, they had to imagine a better world than this one, a utopia.
