Editorial statement regarding the recent Crikey piece.

In Crikey, Sami Shah stated that The Shot is anti-Semitic, describing our masthead as “an attempt at a satirical site for people who found Facebook comments insufficiently moderated” and our work as “Practically demonstrations of antisemitism". Embarrassingly, in the same week, The Australian more accurately described us as “left-wing” and “probing the limits of law and language”.

Sami singled out two article headlines, The royal commission into the hurt feelings of genocidal psychopaths and Updates from the royal commission into the selective outrage of Zionists, which he clearly didn’t read before accusing us of sloppy “media criticism”. The headlines were mine, the body copy written by Joel Jenkins. They were no-bullshit, reality based tear downs of the fascistic assaults on our democracy, which all of us can see so plainly with our own eyes. Even liberal Zionist cowards like Shah.

During a mass slaughter that our government is supporting materially and diplomatically, it's not good enough to have segments of the indie media community trying to un-stretch the Overton Window back inside the borders set by decades of hasbara, horrifically biased and supremacist mass media, and the whims of the genocidal psychopaths. We don’t know how many Australians love milquetoast fence-sitting during atrocity, but Pew research shows that 80% of us despise Israeli atrocity and fascistic overreach into our democracies.

As a credo, I try to treat people with the same level of respect I am shown. We have done more serious analysis and investigative reporting on this depravity than Crikey has, a much larger outlet with more staff and resources. Over the years, The Sunday Shot has also platformed many Crikey writers. Needless to say, that moment has passed us by.

To make such petty remarks at some of the few unvarnished truth-tellers in Australian journalism on this subject, in this moment of abject moral failure, of cowardice and of complicity, speaks to the hollow pettiness of Shah’s analysis. Focus on what really matters, please.

There is enough genocide apologia in the corporate press already. It's pathetic to see it in the indie space, too. Do better, Crikey, your readers expect more.
