While cleaning out my childhood home, toys I used to play with as a kid keep turning up, and I can't seem to make any progress. Only now do I realize I was a typical Japanese child.

New Year's Day is the time of the Tondo-san festival. Applying the resulting charcoal to your face is for good health. When I was able to have my face painted in an area I had visited many times for photography in Okuizumo, it was like being included in a group. From my photobook ‘x elements かぜとつちと’

One of my favorite spreads from the photo book “x elements かぜとつちと” (Akaaka). The left image shows a persimmon that fell in the garden of an abandoned house and was bitten by a beast, and the right image is a scene from when I was allowed to accompany a wild boar hunting trip into the mountains.

A wild boar was found with a leg partially missing. It is said that this is because it was caught in a snare trap and to escape, it tore off or bit off a part of its leg. It seems thin but it will soon get used to it and grow fat. From my photo exhibition “x elements / Earth” (Nikon Salon, 2024)

In areas hit by animal damage, farmers often obtain hunting licenses and set box traps. However, it is not easy to catch them. Some beasts play like a jungle gym. From my photo exhibition “x elements / Earth” (Nikon Salon, 2024)

I was able to set up an infrared camera in an abandoned house and was able to capture the beast gathering to eat berries that had fallen from a persimmon tree in the garden. I came to understand that the issue in depopulated areas is not “the decrease in the number of people and the loss of vitality,” but rather the damage caused by animals. The remaining residents are forced to fight against the beasts. From my photo book “x elements かぜとつちと” (published by Akaaka)

In order to photograph the beasts that ravage the fields, an expert with damage to the infrared camera said, “Wait two months to see if you get a picture,” but with no difficulty, the boars were in the field within a week. From the photo exhibition “x elements / Earth” (Nikon Salon, 2024)

“Coexistence is a terrible thing. It's a battle,” said a farmer. Even a stranger like myself feels anger when I see a wild boar ravaging a rice field just before the rice harvest. Of course, the beasts don't mean any harm. From the website “The Strata of Time” kinoseido.jp/works/xeleme...

It was a first visit to the shrine this year, or rather, a belated visit to thank the people I had the pleasure of meeting last year. On this day, one year has passed since the Noto Peninsula earthquake.May this year bring peace and tranquility to Japan and the world.

I was able to create a layered structure by cutting out the mat, which I thought was impossible with "The Strata of Time," a work that overlaps photos taken at the same position. Gasendo in Kyoto worked on this project for weeks through trial and error. On the website kinoseido.jp/works/xeleme...

It was a gift from PURPLE when I had my photo book "x elements かぜとつちと" signed at PURPLE. I still love the sponge cake from Fukusaya and the coarse sugar at the bottom, and I don't feel like I could eat it endlessly. Thank you for the food.

When kagura is viewed as theater, the interaction between the performers and the audience is extremely interesting. It really looked like a play. Performing arts that are rooted in the community with the power of the local residents are truly precious. From my photo book “x elements かぜとつちと”

Inheritance of tradition is difficult. Izumo's Odochi Kagura is an example of a tradition that preserves the old and challenges the new through the participation and mutual respect of everyone from the elderly to high school students. From my photo book “x elements かぜとつちと” (published by Akaaka)

While I took photographs in Shimane, Japan, that wind and soil begin as friction, leading to biodiversity and resilience, I began to liken it to human society. Wind is the “power to change” and soil is the “power to protect. The two creates a strong community. From my photo book "x elements かぜとつちと"

While photographing in Shimane, Japan, I realized the obvious: places where wind and soil rub against each other are essential for biodiversity and resilience. Clouds would come up and rain would fall. Rainbows can appear every 30 minutes. From my photo book “x elements かぜとつちと” (published by Akaaka)

Dripping with sweat on a summer day, I was walking through the mountains in Japan when a pleasant breeze suddenly began to caress my skin. There was a village where the tatara culture still remains. I understood that the climate influences the way people live. From my photo book "x elements かぜとつちと"

How do myths get started? Shimane in Japan is known for its windy weather and ever-changing clouds as the poem "Spring up Eight Clouds". You see several glowing beams of light in the sky, rich in color. The climate must have influenced people's way of thinking. From my photo book "x elements かぜとつちと"

I came to Unnan & Okuizumo in Japan because of my interest in tatara, but I was also blown away by the climate in Shimane. It's not like humans are dominating nature; it's more like humans and nature are communicating. You can feel that everywhere. From my photo book "x elements かぜとつちと"

I majored in ferrous metallurgy, and I was amazed at how fresh the glassy slag looked, as well as the steel. It was very colorful, perhaps due to thin-film interference. It has a different charm than industrial products that are made with careful handwork. From my photo book "x elements かぜとつちと"
