Having started down that path before AI (or even the pandemic) I agree. AI might be the nail in the coffin for many things tho

Every instance was reported to 311 btw. And every vehicle apart from the green one is a well-known offender

And on the sidewalk at Central Library yesterday (they illegally parked a food truck here as well)

Not to mention where observed driving on the sidewalk this morning

They also parked another truck in the turning lane and blocking the hydrant.

. @nypdnews.bsky.social did not act on this illegally parked food truck I reported at 9am (alongside a cart from the same franchise in the bus stop) however did provide presence I gather because of a union action. This type of illegal parking impeded safe loading/unloading.

Speaking of signage, when I contacted the @nycdot.bsky.social about the confusing signal timing (contributing to a recent crash) at this intersection they asserted it complied with MUTCD. However MUTCD mandates a W25-1. Thoughts @nickbenson.com?

Who wants to help organize a workshop on effectively reporting illegal parking to the NYPD?

As I’ve said, even restoring the BQE isn’t going to cope with demand—it’s a one more lane bro situation. If we truly feel trucking is essential to the economy (I think so FWIW) then we need expensive toll roads primarily for commercial traffic. But TLC, car owners get mad so

According to Saturday’s SR resolution action they got a summons but I think that was a “wrong button press” situation—happens. They did bring a different van Sunday

Got some new Vision Zero signage on the parkway. Unfortunately one of one of the most reported offenders of endangering cyclists and pedestrians continues to get off Scott free*. @nypdnews.bsky.social did take over 12 hours to close the SR however.

Relatedly there’s a kind of Dunning-Kruger fallacy where because AI is demonstrably good at certain things it must be at anything else. If it can produce code or web content it’s bound to solve climate change

And as an aside: a lot of AI discourse suffers not having a fix agreement about what “working” means. Works to rapidly identify software vulnerabilities or works as superintelligence?

Peter W. @kinographer.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Treating AI as vaporware is ofc foolish at this point. But something can be essentially vaporware and still harmful. Particularly by a police state trying to self-gaslight toward justification of what it was already going to do

As an aside I’d question the bus factor of losing any particular individual, whether at work or among political activists. If anything demonstrating you don’t really care if you got the right person and keeping everyone on edge is if not more effective appears more common

LLMs are perhaps (and unsurprisingly) comparable to statistics in this regard. A source of (relatively) objective information, but can often be twisted convincingly to suit one’s agenda or plain misused. There is no inherent truthfulness or inherent mendaciousness

Peter W. @kinographer.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I’d argue Our Man in Havana is closer to the historical default. Inquisitors are seeking validation or want to flex arbitrary power even though it means collateral damage…in which sense LLMs very much work. They work to build software and do other things too

I’ve largely given up on a 311 complaint doing anything in and of itself. I think (sunk cost fallacy?) the value lies in documenting the occurrence and highlighting agency inaction

Peter W. @kinographer.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Pretty typical 311 SR lifecycle these days. 1:12 - opened 2:48 - updated 9:20 - closed

Sadly the most effective tactic wrt street safety I’ve found is simply angrily tagging people on X. I don’t think that’s great or healthy. But expecting agencies to just handle complaints in good faith just isn’t the reality we’re working with

Report to DSNY as operating in a prohibited area. This is a vendor rule violation in addition to violation of traffic law.

Peter W. @kinographer.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
As my readers will know I have an ongoing beef with illegally parked/driving on sidewalk street vendor vehicles (3 SRs today). A long and painful journey with little support from the city, but I’ve gotten things to improve marginally (and temporarily I’m sure) at Brooklyn Museum and Central Library

Worth noting at this point we’re at best reheating Moses’ leftovers, however we feel about them. Those grand projects aren’t possible anymore. At best we can spend a decade rebuilding parts of a freeway which probably won’t make sense by completion

The MTA is like 80% to blame for fare evasion for having such a dysfunctional fare enforcement and ticketing system. And speaking of theft, does nothing about placard corruption on the part of its employees

Peter W. @kinographer.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Isn’t populism generally (and I would say pretty assertively) oriented against AI? This feels more like an elite push to deal with backlash which transcends typical partisan divides. Tho I realize we are living in Klein’s Doppelgänger world where terms like populism escape definition

Peter W. @kinographer.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Can confirm.

Worth noting to the extent these things are approached rationally, one can get far more traction blocking a data center than shutting down entrenched agricultural vested interests (also no one mentions mining’s depletion of aquifer, ironically competing with ranching where I’m from)

Peter W. @kinographer.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Like cars and many things social media is a mixed curse and probably net harmful. AI will likely pan out similarly

Peter W. @kinographer.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Call me a Deweyite, but I think it’s less the subject matter per se than how to be a responsible participant in society isn’t inculcated in general (which requires far more than some electives). Ask the DOT about a dangerous traffic signal and they’ll bludgeon you with MUTCD

IAB exonerated officers for a ghost vehicle I reported because the address was supposedly wrong—it was alongside a park and I used the closest street number geolclient would accept. Granted cross streets, distances were provided in the description

Is this same group up in arms about Ideal deliveries constantly blocking the bus lane? @fdny.bsky.social personal cars obstructing the sidewalk on St John’s? Uhauls parked in crosswalk? etc

A politician who ran on moderation and claims that as a mandate isn’t likely to have the backs of vulnerable groups. And still may lose reelection because culture war swing voters are insatiable—not even Trump keeps them happy

What concretely does moderation mean on this context? AFAICT pols and pundits are playing games with subtext and letting the audience fill in the blanks. Rs do it too an worse but they require a different strategy—political leaders prepared to stand up for vulnerable groups, among other things
