The Germans have a word (of course they do) for vicarious embarrassment about someone else's cringeworthy behavior: die Fremdscham. It's all Fremdscham all the time now, isn't it?

OTD in Jane Austen's life, 1804: Jane walks for an hour on the Cobb at Lyme Regis. She attends a ball at the assembly rooms and meets some "bold, queer looking people, just fit to be Quality at Lyme."
"A Long-Headed Minuet!!" - 1807, by Isaac Cruikshank. The satirical caricature shows a ballroom with people with exaggeratedly long heads dancing and sitting.

Jane Austen's full poem with Lake Ontario: "In measured verse I’ll now rehearse    The charms of lovely Anna: And, first, her mind is unconfined    Like any vast savannah. Ontario’s lake may fitly speak    Her fancy’s ample bound: Its circuit may, on strict survey    Five hundred miles be found.

Jane Austen compared Lake Ontario to a favorite niece in a poem, therefore that is its name for all time: "In measured verse I'll now rehearse The charms of lovely Anna: ... Ontario's lake may fitly speak Her fancy's ample bound: Its circuit may, on strict survey Five hundred miles be found."
