Every design element needs a reason to exist. I still can’t think of any reason for glass bathroom walls in business hotel rooms.

A designer complaining that their job is full of “solved problems” is like a doctor saying they only want to treat novel diseases. The job is mostly not finding new cures. It’s helping teams adopt what’s likely to help in their context.

hey, this is a fairly nerdy news item, but you should absolutely know about it. (looks like there are links in other posts in the thread.) the Post Office is really contemplating not delivering ballots unless states expose their voters' data to DOJ. I hate saying read that again but, read it again

california is gonna have so many mail in ballots that don’t get counted because people don’t know the new USPS rules that are impacting mail in voting. tl;dr don’t put your ballot in the mail today, find a ballot drop box. www.kqed.org/news/1208537...

The designer’s role will always be evolving, but it’s obviously still needed. 🙈

Why did the Google Maps team make audible driving directions less usable recently? “Go past Irrelevant Road, then take your second left onto Correct Street toward Another Irrelevant Road.” Let me guess—LLM creep? Increasing driver cognitive load is a safety issue.

Almost every time I teach interview data analysis, someone asks if they can use software to automate it. The point is to understand the data, not to produce a report. Learning takes time and messiness.

Your metrics should definitely include how well your app supports particular user goals. But you can’t assume every potential goal is relevant to every user—people who don’t care about something often won’t know how to rate it.
Survey question: How helpful is WhatsApp at allowing you to express your moods and feelings, compared to other apps you use? A lot less helpful, Less helpful, About the same, More helpful, A lot more helpful

We are oddly selective about the government services about which we will say, they operate at a loss. Commuter rail, we are often told, operates at a loss. But we spend even more on street and highways, and take in little direct revenue from them. Yet no one ever says they are operating at a loss.
NEW: The U.S. Postal Service posted a net loss of $3.3 billion in this fiscal year’s second quarter mainly due to “significant challenges out of our control,” including workers’ compensation costs, Luke Grossmann, USPS chief financial officer, said at the open session of the governing board meeting

No, really, don’t do this with pie charts.
A Fortune Magazine pie chart describes what careers Generation Alpha preferred in a survey where they could select multiple options. The numbers add up to well over 100%, so the proportions in the pie are meaningless.

United’s app is great at delivering just-in-time info. Too bad it’s often wrong. (International arrivals don’t go straight between gates—you can’t clear immigration, bag claim, customs, security, & a much longer walk in 11 minutes.) Data quality is UX, too
United Airlines app screen shows 11 minute walk time between airport gates, along with walking directions. It does not account for the flight being international, which requires a different route.

In addition to all the heinous fuckery happening in the NC Supreme Court election--where the loser is trying to throw out 60,000 votes--the form that caused the problem in the first place did so because it neglected to list NC drivers license or last four digits of your SSN as a required field.
The North Carolina Voter Registration Application before it was updated in 2023. It states that fields in red text are required, but doesn't use a second method, like an asterisk, to convey that information.
