The Eastern part of Canada was settled primarily by countries in the early British Empire, England, Ireland and Scotland much like Australia so that's why the accent seems familiar.

Not me but it could be from way back in NL history, at one point England owned half the island & France owned the other. You can see where the boundaries began & ended from just looking at the town names even today. Half the island have french town names & half the island have english town names.
