Mary @kilerkki.bsky.social · 14hAlthough the story itself does portray crosswords as a new fad, so I have unjustly maligned Aunt Dorothy: 000
Mary @kilerkki.bsky.social · 15hDorothy Sayers has misled me: I’d always figured the crossword must have been introduced much earlier, since it figures so prominently in The Fascinating Problem of Uncle Meleager's Will (first published 1925). 250

Mary @kilerkki.bsky.social · 10/10/2026I think Nicola Griffith’s SPEAR might do this for you, unless I’m misremembering… 110
Mary @kilerkki.bsky.social · 08/10/2026Here on Bsky and I believe on Instagram too, under the same handle: @himmapaan.bsky.social for incredible art of the natural world, reminiscent of childhood’s favourite Rackham illustrations 240
Mary @kilerkki.bsky.social · 07/10/2026This feels like it strikes the perfect balance between calming and cheerful. So pretty. 120
Mary @kilerkki.bsky.social · 05/10/2026I’ve seen so much praise for Best Horse Pebbles that I feel really guilty for trading her in for Bucephalus and now Shadowmere but I’m a loot goblin and I need that carry weight 😔 (Really looking forward to KCD2, but the early struggle is my favourite part of games and KCD hits that so well!) 020
Mary @kilerkki.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Hyperfixation is still at or near 100% (although I did take all weekend off in an attempt to be present in my life & relationships 😂). SUCH a steep learning curve taking Henry from illiterate village kid to confident & competent man at arms, & so fun to feel like I’m mastering it! 130
Mary @kilerkki.bsky.social · 04/10/2026It was an incredible meal! Especially the complex & layered hollandaise—they’re sometimes too rich or cloying, but this one was bright and intensely flavourful! 110
Mary @kilerkki.bsky.social · 04/10/2026she told me she wasn’t trained to stand up to lawyerly cross-examination 😔 130
Mary @kilerkki.bsky.social · 04/10/2026(Paladin, by the way, was a PEST during most of the cooking but eventually exiled himself to a nap in the sunbeam. When we sat down to eat, he came back to beg for his share. (He got a tiny morsel of egg white and a crumb of biscuit. We aren’t MONSTERS.)) 280
Mary @kilerkki.bsky.social · 04/10/2026And there we had it: sausage eggs Benedict on cheesy buttermilk biscuits for an incredible birthday brunch. 270
Mary @kilerkki.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Finally the poached eggs, fresh as possible. Water gently simmering (“a nice egg jacuzzi!”), then a splash of white vinegar & stir to a vortex before slipping pre-cracked egg in. Poach to desired doneness, then lift out with slotted spoon & let rest briefly on paper towel; cut away any clotted white 170
Mary @kilerkki.bsky.social · 04/10/2026When the sauce threatened to seize, he added a little hot water to smooth it out before drizzling butter again. Drizzle SLOWLY & whisk fast; remove from heat earlier in the process than you’d think, esp if your Bain Marie is makeshift like ours. Desired texture coats spoon but pours off smoothly. 130
Mary @kilerkki.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Then the Hollandaise, which scared me the most. Tarragon, shallots, & black peppercorns simmered in a little white vinegar. 3 egg yolks beaten with a spoonful of Dijon mustard over Bain Marie til thickened. 8 Tbsp butter melted (tho we added two more, for 10 Tbsp total). 2 Tbsp lemon juice & salt. 140
Mary @kilerkki.bsky.social · 04/10/2026We made buttermilk biscuits with cold butter grated, then frozen to stay as cold as possible before mixing in the dough; plus grated cheese folded in at the end & sprinkled over top. Shape the dough by hand, don’t roll; and punch the biscuit cutter down, never twist. 18 minutes at 425. 170
Mary @kilerkki.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Then we made sausage (with clove, marjoram, sage, salt, red pepper flakes, black pepper, garlic powder, & added bacon fat). We learned to mix gently in one direction to avoid tightening proteins; shape the patties in a ring-mold, with a divot for egg-cradling; sear on cast iron but don’t overcook 160
Mary @kilerkki.bsky.social · 04/10/2026I forgot to buy key lime juice, so instead we zested so many Persian limes for a lovely green custard pie. 160
Mary @kilerkki.bsky.social · 04/10/2026SO it came to pass that we went grocery shopping together yesterday (tho she bought cloves & marjoram on her own at the Bulk Barn after all) and Chef A came over for cooking today!! 150
Mary @kilerkki.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Next day my wife comes to me with the most woebegone face. “I tried to keep this a secret but I CANNOT LIE TO YOU and also I realized I can’t do the full grocery shop on my own & then successfully hide it from you; my friends volunteered their fridges but— I CAN’T KEEP LYING.” Me: There was a lie?? 380
Mary @kilerkki.bsky.social · 04/10/2026So my lovely wife went off tortured with guilt for lying BADLY to me, and I went back to my video game feeling vaguely bad about my spicelessness but promptly forgot all about it in the struggle of keeping Henry of Skalitz alive in 15th century Bohemia. 270
Mary @kilerkki.bsky.social · 04/10/2026I don’t know many chicken dishes that involve clove, but of course I don’t know much about MidEastern cooking. We sadly agreed colleague was on her own. I privately resolved to buy some clove soon anyway (for pork & apple pie this autumn?) Wife was apparently panicking the whole time. 271
Mary @kilerkki.bsky.social · 04/10/2026A pantry ransack proved we have neither clove nor marjoram. Colleague could go to Bulk Barn, of course, but we have failed to provide!! Maybe an alternative? I asked, What’s the dish? Her, sweating: it’s… chicken. Something Middle Eastern. 170
Mary @kilerkki.bsky.social · 04/10/2026A couple of days ago, my lovely wife off-handedly asked if we have clove or marjoram. Me: No, I think we tossed the clove earlier this year… Why? Her, thinking fast: Oh, my colleague wants to make a dish and didn’t have the right spices but thought we might. Me: WE’RE LETTING THEM DOWN. 180
Mary @kilerkki.bsky.social · 04/10/2026For my birthday this year, my amazing wife @meowbrey.bsky.social gave me the incredible gift of a morning with our chef friend learning to make sausage eggs Benedict on fluffy cheesy buttermilk biscuits, followed by lime custard pie. We also learned that she is wholly incapable of lying to me. 2160
Mary @kilerkki.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Best butter tarts in Toronto, with a deeply caramelized flaky crust and a delicately set filling with almost chewy top. so good! 010
Mary @kilerkki.bsky.social · 01/10/2026A grey and gloomy Thursday immeasurably sweetened when my wife brought home a Bà Nội butter tart. 😘 191
Mary @kilerkki.bsky.social · 29/09/2026I haven’t been able to keep up with installments, but buying the books as they come out and saving them up for my hour of greatest need. It’s a comfort to know they’re waiting for me. Thank you. 💜 010
Mary @kilerkki.bsky.social · 28/09/2026I made applesauce with Paula Reds last week—really nice tart flavour and absolutely perfect mush texture. 😂 How are the Winesaps? 100
Mary @kilerkki.bsky.social · 26/09/2026I have always been jealous of your pantry and now even more so! We got some plastic bins at the dollar store that I have really really liked for organizing things in the freezer, and a turntable or two in the pantry that make a world of difference for getting things in back corners. 100
Mary @kilerkki.bsky.social · 26/09/2026It must be a VERY good house to overcome the 4! (Our building doesn’t have a 4th floor or a 14th… or a 13th either. Covering all the superstitions 😂) 010
Mary @kilerkki.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Hah, all I know of feng shui is from the Dear Modern guy’s instagram reels, but apparently my MIL helped with condo selection so we’ve got excellent south-facing exposure, & our recent reno brought in much more sense of brightness & spaciousness to a small condo! 210

Mary @kilerkki.bsky.social · 25/09/2026it’s okay if the spicy noodles make me cry I can pretend it’s just for Jingyan’s breaking heart 180
Mary @kilerkki.bsky.social · 25/09/2026I guess I needn’t have brought a book to this Chongqing spicy noodle shop because THEY’RE PLAYING NIRVANA IN FIRE Episode 50 oh no JINGYAN BBY 1221
Mary @kilerkki.bsky.social · 25/09/2026also wishes he had a loving wife who would get up to go to the bathroom FIRST, thereby proving its safety, and then kindly explain that if it’s a Chinese water demon it wouldn’t come after us anyway bc our feng shui is so good (and also the excellence of Toronto water treatment plant) 280
Mary @kilerkki.bsky.social · 25/09/2026Dreamed Supernatural returned with Sam & Dean investigating a Black Water Demon that moved through the pipes to infect a young mother, her care team, & Dean himself; but as great as it was to see the Winchester Boys again, I am now TERRIFIED to get up and go to the bathroom. 1100
