kilandra.bsky.social @kilandra.bsky.social · 26/11/2024Whenever a new MMO comes out, I need to figure out how the gearing works. Will it be a new form of gearing? Will it follow base MMO rules like WoW? Will I instantly uninstall if I see an enhancement system? If you made it down here, what's your favorite MMO and way to gear? 020
kilandra.bsky.social @kilandra.bsky.social · 26/11/2024To upgrade an accessory, you need a second version of that accessory. If this wasn't bad enough, if you fail at upgrading an accessory, both accessories break in the enhancement process. It's an RNG nightmare that will force players into paying for RNG boosts to get the gear they want. 130
kilandra.bsky.social @kilandra.bsky.social · 26/11/2024If you hit duo (17), and fail the enhancement, it drops back down to pri. This means you don't need to get lucky once, you need to get lucky five times, with each chance being lower than the last. 100
kilandra.bsky.social @kilandra.bsky.social · 26/11/2024From 1 to 15 though, if you fail, you can get a bonus enhancement percent. (Fail a 50% chance, next chance is 60%). The soul sucking part comes afterwards. 16 - 20 is called pri-duo-tri-tet-pen. Once you hit Pri (16) on a piece of armor, it can never drop below that. 100
kilandra.bsky.social @kilandra.bsky.social · 26/11/2024There are 20 levels of enhancing. The first are +1 to +15. Enhancements cost materials, more materials the higher you go. The first few enhancements are at a 100% chance of success, but the higher you go, the smaller it can get. If you fail to level up, you lose the materials. 100
kilandra.bsky.social @kilandra.bsky.social · 26/11/2024There aren't a lot of gear sets in BDO, especially when comparing to other mmo's. Gearing up in BDO is entirely RNG dependent and designed to encourage the player spend money in the in game shop to have better chances of gearing. To increase the power of an armor piece, you need to enhance it. 100
kilandra.bsky.social @kilandra.bsky.social · 26/11/2024Black Desert Online is an incredibly popular MMO. I have over 1600 hours in it (most of it horse training lol), but it has one of the most frustrating and gamer milking gearing mechanics ever. I'm not sure of the exact name of this system, so I'll call it the enhancement system. 110
kilandra.bsky.social @kilandra.bsky.social · 26/11/2024By having all gear be at the same cap, new gear has the chance to be basically dead on arrival. New sets that you will never use because why would you. It can also lead to incredibly stale builds if certain pieces of gear can stay powerful for far too long. 100
kilandra.bsky.social @kilandra.bsky.social · 26/11/2024That piece of gear you put a ton of time into getting will always be useable. You will never feel like the grind you did wasn't worth it because you know a shinier staff is going to make yours obsolete. The downside is when you think about the meta or use that that's statistically better. 100
kilandra.bsky.social @kilandra.bsky.social · 26/11/2024One thing WoW does is make gear useless when the next patch or expansion comes out. A lot of MMO's do this, but ESO doesn't. Elder Scrolls gearing has gear that can stay relevant even past patches and expanions as at max level, all of the gear is at the same height. This has a LOT of pros to it! 130
kilandra.bsky.social @kilandra.bsky.social · 26/11/2024ModernWoW is more focused on getting the right gear with the right stats to customize your character to the tiniest percentage. Because of this, it showers you in gear. Neither of these gearing systems are worse or better than the other because they're basically in different games and styles. 100
kilandra.bsky.social @kilandra.bsky.social · 26/11/2024In Classic, across the dungeons you can do at max level, there are 15 epic pieces of gear. In the War Within, in one dungeon (The Stonevault), 26 pieces of gear drop, and that's just one dungeon out of 8. The epics from classic are valued way higher because of this. 100
kilandra.bsky.social @kilandra.bsky.social · 26/11/2024The Westfall defias storyline will eventually lead you to receiving an amazing blue piece of gear that your character will use for many levels. It's a slow burn that has a large payoff. ModernWoW is different in the way that the gearing isn't a slow burn anymore. 100
kilandra.bsky.social @kilandra.bsky.social · 26/11/2024World of Warcraft and World of Warcraft classic have the same gearing system while the acquisition of gear is totally different. WoWClassic focuses more on a very slow progression of power. You can do entire questlines like in Duskwood where hours of work gets you a new helmet or shoulder piece. 120
kilandra.bsky.social @kilandra.bsky.social · 26/11/2024Let's talk about gearing in MMO's. #mmo #gamedesign To me, gearing your characters is one of the most important parts of the game. It's a mark that really lets you see how far you've come while playing the game. I'll touch on some games below, but not FF 14. I have not played enough of it :( 150

kilandra.bsky.social @kilandra.bsky.social · 20/10/2024I believe everyone can like a fishing minigame in one game or another. If you say you don't like fishing in games, you just haven't found the right fish for you (possibly). On an ending note, I want a Planet Zoo game but it's Planet Aquarium and I can have the sunfish I've always wanted. #sunfish 010
kilandra.bsky.social @kilandra.bsky.social · 20/10/2024There are many other fishing minigames out there as well. Roots of Pacha has a fun one where you hover the cursor over the fish as it swims around, keeping the cursor inside the radius. Sea of Stars has a super unique take as well, making it a quick, fast paced game of reel and don't reel. 110
kilandra.bsky.social @kilandra.bsky.social · 20/10/2024When you display fish in SV, you place it in an actual tank. You can even get large tanks to place lots of fishies in and can decorate them with rocks and seaweed and other fun items. Organizing your fish by color or by location is super fun too. Make sure to put the mutant carp in the baby room. 110
kilandra.bsky.social @kilandra.bsky.social · 20/10/2024If you have a faulty mouse or a twitch in the finger or anything like that, it can instantly make fishing in Stardew much harder. Talking about displaying fish though, in Stardew it is so much better than in animal crossing. Granted, it would be cool to have a museum for fish, what we get is cool. 100
kilandra.bsky.social @kilandra.bsky.social · 20/10/2024Everything involved in Stardew Valley fishing just makes it easier. Bigger bars, fish get away slower, extra treasure, slower movement, there are so many ways to improve the fishing that it's fun until the very end. Again, I know some people think it can be hard and I agree with that. 110
kilandra.bsky.social @kilandra.bsky.social · 20/10/2024Stardew Valley fishing is my personal favorite fishing in any video game. The minigame is short if you are good at it, not too long if you're not good at it, and it doesn't require bait to actually fish (huge W for fishing minigames, collecting bait is the worst part). 110
kilandra.bsky.social @kilandra.bsky.social · 20/10/2024You can also display the fish you catch in Animal Crossing in a museum as well as in your house or literally anywhere you want. The depressing part is that I had to keep my sunfish in what looked like a kiddy pool or box on my front lawn. I'll enjoy my fish in the museum, thank you. 110
kilandra.bsky.social @kilandra.bsky.social · 20/10/2024The different shadow sizes determine the different types of fish you can get. The location on the island can change the fish as well. You need to cast the rod in a way that gets the fishies attention, then the minigame is a short test of reaction. I have seen some people say it's too hard though. 110
kilandra.bsky.social @kilandra.bsky.social · 20/10/2024This is where Animal Crossing comes in. The fishing in Animal Crossing is probably one of the closest fishing minigames we've gotten in terms of appealing to a wide audience (audience being fishing enjoyers). The mini game is relatively fast and is just complicated enough to keep the brain going. 110
