Amazon?
Combined bar and line chart, 2004–2025. Red bars show extra minutes per day Americans spent at home compared with 2003: under 35 through 2019, a jump to 135 in 2020, then about 95–115 through 2025. A dark blue line shows Amazon net sales excluding AWS, rising steadily from under $10 billion in 2004 to $245 billion in 2019, $341 billion in 2020 and $588 billion in 2025.

The rise of Spirit Halloween: How the Spencer Gifts-owned chain took over American strip malls and turned itself into a meme of the Retail Apocalypse

Holy fabricated footnotes, Batman! How much of this garbage does it take to actually destroy the average person's digital footprint?
from https://hub.stellantis.com/article/the-hidden-math-behind-the-0-viral-social-media-code

The most striking estimate comes from former Facebook data scientist Damon Kiesow, who in a 2019 interview with The Atlantic suggested that the platform’s algorithm penalizes "slow burns"—content that gains traction over days or weeks—in favor of "instant gratification loops." This aligns with the broader trend of platforms rewarding content that exploits FOMO (fear of missing out), even if that content is shallow or ephemeral.

I think the NYT maybe ought to give up on headlines till it can decide if authoritarian censorship is bad or not. “Overhaul” is a weasel word even in news coverage and the counterpoint in the subhead has a caveat.

Missed it in June but love the top of @dicktofel.bsky.social newsletter linked here. Brand said 'Information wants to be free' at a Hacker's Conference and it has been wildly misunderstood by journalism. I feature it in my chapter on 'The Business of Content.' dicktofel.substack.com/p/on-ai-pred...
From chapter five of An Introduction to News Product: "The ethic of the Hackers Conference was not naïvely utopian but a rather
prescient recognition of the coming disruption. As Brand and others have since argued, when information becomes digital and distribution frictionless, traditional business models, laws, and regulations designed for the manufacturing and sale of physical goods will be renegotiated by society"

Pratchett describing Associate Professors. (Sourcery, 1988)
It may be quite tough at the top, and it is probably even tougher at the bottom, but halfway up it's so tough you could use it for horseshoes. By then all the no-hopers, the lazy, the silly and the downright unlucky have been weeded out, the field's cleared, and every wizard stands alone and surrounded by mortal enemies on every side.
There's the pushy fours below, waiting to trip him up. There's the arrogant sixes above, anxious to stamp out all ambition. And, of course, all around are his fellow fives, ready for any opportunity to reduce the competition a little. And there's no standing still.
Wizards of the fifth level are mean and tough and have reflexes of steel and their eyes are thin and narrow from staring down the length of that metaphorical last furlong at the end of which rests the prize of prizes, the Archchancellor's hat.

I am curious what every newsroom that does NOT write with this sort of context thinks about the Guardian doing so. Is accurately quoting a source unjournalistic? www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...
Kirk, a far-right political figure who served as a sort of Pied Piper for young Republicans through his Turning Point USA foundation, was shot dead in September last year. He was known for his racist and bigoted views, using his podcast to claim that "prowling Blacks go around for fun to go target white people" and speculating: "If I see a Black pilot, I'm going to be like: 'Boy, I hope he's qualified'"
Despite, or perhaps because of, such beliefs, Kirk became a hugely celebrated and influential figure in Maga circles. In New York City, one of the most diverse, and Democratic, cities in the US, Kirk is far less popular.

A very healthy thing for journalism could do is to STOP quoting absolutely useless, conspiratorial, uninformed and uneducated anonymous "social media users" just to fill a few column inches.
From the WaPo: But the algae blooms that have long plagued the pool came roaring back, spawning more than a few conspiracy theories and much debate about the renovation. Some social media users said they suspected
"bureaucrats" had seeded the algae bloom in an act of sabotage, while others claimed photos showing the reappearance of the algae were taken during the Biden years. Trump administration officials said the algae was caused by residual material in supply lines that had been dormant for weeks.
