Do you know what station ridership is and how many elevators were used? Also what fire code is used in Korea?

Well Lex 63rd is a transfer station, a very good cross platform one

What's the GTX A transfer time data?

I mean, they'll take 5 min each for most of them, so most trips using SAS West will incur an extra 10 min.

The 2 new tracks could also be HSR in many areas, yet Alto seems to avoid using any of these ROWs, for a reason.

They are currently buying 10 battery locomotives for Providence, though. That definitely could've been electric locomotives instead.

The bigger issue with the BEMUs is they wouldn't even build high platforms at two stations, which dramatically increases the BEMU cost by more than high platforms costs. Buying FLIRT BEMUs at Metra costs would save $600M out of $765M, and high platforms would generously cost $100M for 2 stations.

That's not their point. Imagine you tap at 1:00 and ride until 1:30. Then you take another ride at 2:45, so you're not charged then. You ride until 3:15. From 3:00-3:15, you don't have a valid payment even though you tapped at 2:45, so you'd have to somehow tap in the middle of your trip.

Still Want Free Parking? That’ll Cost $73,000 - California YIMBY
Housing costs have risen sharply across the U.S. in recent years, prompting cities to examine rules that drive up construction costs. One long-standing and costly rule: parking mandates.  A new UCLA a...

I was surprised to learn Wabtec designed and built the 450 kmh pantograph on the CR450, which intends to set a 600 kmh record. And they built the one used on the TGV record run, too.

I'm not sure. But the new trains ran mixed with the refurbished trains during the switchover, and prior to refurbishment those trains were KCR, so I would think so? I can't find anything that more definitively says one way or another, though.

They're the only ones I'm aware of that significantly metroified through a refurbishment rather than just ordering new trains

And now with the next generation of rolling stock, they're running under CBTC and are currently adding PSDs.

What about the HK East Rail line's MTR Metro Cammell EMUs that underwent their major Mid Life Refurbishment? They went from 3 to 5 doors per car, removed intermediate cabs, formed fixed 12-car sets, added open gangways, and switched to longitudinal seating.

Stop consolidation I think has a much stronger argument given the much better transfer and you avoid 2 ADA upgrades, which would be a significant portion of an infill cost.

I don't know the source of the difference, but I don't know what else it might be in comparing Elizabeth vs Thameslink trunk, Elizabeth trunk vs isolated branch, and RER E tunnel vs surface.
110
Khyber Sen @khyber.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
It's hard to say exactly the root cause because I don't have much data here, but it's something I've observed in multiple cities (RER E in it's tunnel is faster, too, for example). Stratford-Shenfield is largely isolated, right? But it's much more sluggish than the central CBTC section.
010
Khyber Sen @khyber.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Then once Elizabeth is out of the tunnel it rarely hits even 60 mph even though the max track speed is often higher.
110
Khyber Sen @khyber.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Not because of the blocks per se (I'm not really sure what it is exactly), but Thameslink crawls for long sections of its trunk very regularly, while Elizabeth cruises at 60 mph between stations basically every time in its tunnel.
210
Khyber Sen @khyber.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Yes, definitely, but you might be choosing between every train being slower and some trains being slower (i.e. delayed)
220
Khyber Sen @khyber.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
That seems like good future proofing, though, given how much better ridership has been than projected.

Khyber Sen @khyber.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Some places are adding virtual blocks to ETCS L2, though, like Vienna.
020
Khyber Sen @khyber.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
The operational speed differences on the central trunk of Elizabeth (Trainguard CBTC) vs Thameslink (ETCS L2 ATO) are huge

Do you mean it does GoA4 reversing?
230
Khyber Sen @khyber.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
I guess this is why ACSES assumes an operator will accelerate for a few seconds instead of braking
010
Khyber Sen @khyber.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
It did feel like Elizabeth tunnel ops were a lot smoother and consistently faster than the RER (minus E) and various S Bahns. Idk about the cost or complexuty worthiness but it does run better imo.

Khyber Sen @khyber.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
I think only Beijing Nanjing nonstop averages 320 km/h, so I'd say that's pretty unlikely here given grades are likely going to slow you down a bit. Including the approaches on either end, around a 250 km/h average seems much more likely, which is generally where European HSR tops out at.

Why only 3 or 4? Canada/Australia seem distinct enough from the US and Europe. And there are city states like Singapore and Hong Kong that are quite different.
