Destroy (all) their ballistic missile launchers? That sounds highly unrealistic... Look at what has happened with the US and Israel trying to do that to Iran. And a key thing to balance in this conflict has always been... To not push Russia so far that they feel that they should use nukes.

If the Republicans manage to retain power in the midterms despite how their popularity has been doing... Then the system has likely been compromised.

That's true, although you have to wonder how much they're really willing to sacrifice for Ukraine. Plus, they're already pulling fuel out of emergency reserves. That may not be safe to continue for a long time.

One of the interesting things about the current situation is that the globalism that Trump decries is now visible. Our interdependence is showing... We can't maintain our quality of life with major international conflicts happening. Both Russia and Ukraine need to be restored to normal somehow.

I think it's more like: • Putin wants an unreasonable deal that he's unlikely to get unless he's close to winning. • Zelenskyy can also only accept deals that Russia won't accept. Ceasefire would likely still be the better resolution for both sides.

Zelenskyy's trust rating is trending down, but he'd likely still win if the election was now. "Aug – Sep 2026: Approximately 54% of Ukrainians trust President Zelenskyy, while 41% do not trust him (a net trust-distrust balance of +13%), according to a KIIS survey reported by Interfax Ukraine."

That'd be a dangerous precedent for when he's no longer in power. There are some things that you're better off never saying.

I think most NATO states have already given away most of their spares. Ukraine may have to innovate their way out of this, because the US' probably won't be able to properly restock them until 2028. Ukraine could offer "Stop firing missiles at us, and we'll stop attacking refineries." to Russia.

Well he is a host / entertainer, so it's understandable that he wants his efforts to land. Plus, however adversarial the relationship, he still needs to try to get better deals where possible.

Theoretical... Since it's not like they're going to hold the US accountable. It's also highly questionable if there was ever any legal standing for the attacks on Iran – especially given that even US intelligence didn't believe that Iran was building nuclear weapons. (And they likely weren't)

I'd be biased towards iterating forward, with some default defense for the poor / uninsured first. Modifying the whole system is difficult anywhere.

The government really should ensure that all citizens do have IDs, and some other absolute basics these days (bank account, basic $100 smartphone at least). And making election day a holiday... Although I'd prefer digital voting with strict pre-verification.

"How effectively can voting be interfered with?" is definitely an interesting question. And it seems that there are many angles for ultimately altering what votes there will be to be counted.

I think this is partially a production / supply problem. The US and allies have burned through a lot of its supplies (partly because of the Iran conflict), and ... These things aren't set up for mass production. Proper recovery is expected by 2028 or so.

What you don't understand is that you don't have an automatic right to the product of other people's work from around the world — to give you a good life. If you can't give (sell) them things that they want, they can and will give what they have to someone else who gives them things that they want.

It's an awkward situation. Once you're in a war, exiting in failure is also costly... Especially for US reputation where the US is a source of security for many countries – and maintains its power in part through that justification and use of military bases in various countries.

Inflation was already barely under control, the US was no longer the biggest oil exporter in the world, and competition internationally was increasing. The US could've just gone the way of the Soviets. Or even harder decisions might've been made later.

The country was death spiraling at the time. Reagan's actions were part of a general adaptation to try to rescue the country.

Improbable. Too much trouble. It's more that you can't directly confront a nuclear power. Thus the current Ukraine situation, because NATO can't directly confront Russia.

Once they have nukes, there's nothing you can do to them. Regime change, even destabilization are bad ideas when you're talking about a nuclear country. Even NK alone can technically ruin the US.

Ignoring the dementedness of the idea of creating systems to make government unaccountable... Legal defense and ability to pay fines wouldn't cover jail time... Unless that mostly can't happen.

What you get is prices getting cheaper... If you can make sure that the tariffs don't come back. The longer the instability lasts, the longer high prices last also.

That would make them difficult to run though, unless the working assumption was that they were either: a) Still more expensive than stores in nearby cities b) (Realistically, on average) For citizens of the East Coast, and with some coordination with other nearby states. NYC can't subsidize others.

They don't mind. It's mostly just a question of where you can make profit. Excessive regulation makes it so that only super expensive buildings make a profit.

The people blocking new housing ... Are usually the local home owners. They're also usually the ones blocking new data centers. It's people's self interest that gets in the way of collective interest.

The other important question overall is: What systems are they setting up to retain power? Even if Trump can't get a 3rd term, that doesn't mean that they can't stay in charge in some real ways even if a non-Republican took the Presidency. If institutions are reshaped for example...

Stock buybacks are like paying down a loan you've taken for when you temporarily don't have an immediate use for that money. You can always sell the stock again if you need to raise directly. All it really means is that you don't have a better long term target for capital spend in the moment.

Those shareholders usually include pension funds and the like. Stocks rising is how 401Ks actually rise to the point that you can retire on them. And the money was made by using other people's investment in the first place.

Ultimately, they have the mindset of rebels or revolutionaries – thinking that the current government was awful and that what they want is actually what's better for the country. Kinda odd seeing rebels take power through democratic processes. Although, it's a rather glitchy process.

It's ultimately about incentives. The real question is: "Do they feel that they need nuclear weapons?" If they really do, then they can find a way... It is ancient technology after all.

The US Government (if you count the states also) spends more in one year than the "combined net worths of all US billionaires". And they don't "have that much money". Those net worths are purely theoretical, dependent on shifting market conditions, and mostly can't be extracted as cash.

It was my assessment when I was working at a consulting firm that customers often liked me because they could see that I was actively trying to solve their problems or help them. Although that didn't work as well when I wasn't talking to them directly and had a PM in between. lol

That would just be taxing yourself into poverty. lol And the combined net worth of all US billionaires is less than what the US government as a whole spends in a single year. So, even if you wrecked the economy by robbing them, you'd get nothing meaningful from it.

People buying your stuff because it's the cheapest / best option available is not them doing you some kind of favor... You're doing them a favor by giving them better options that they are incapable of getting on their own. NASA could never equal SpaceX.

It's not Musk "having" a trillion dollars. It'd be SpaceX, "theoretically" being worth a trillion dollars.

Theoretically, the $300B is the Iranian money still being held by the US. And the whole thing reads like nonsense. Iran has barely any leverage over the US. They can at most hurt Arabs, and the evidence is mostly against them even being able to do that.

Not even remotely believable. You realize that Israel is also a party to this, and whether or not the war continues partly depends on whether Israel feels that the war should continue.

The "total" net worth of all US billionaires is $8 trillion... Or barely over the US Federal government's spend in one year, and below the total fed + states US spend for one year. And where it can't be done, if you could convert it into cash, $4T split across Americans is already ~$12K, is ~50%.

It is a spend. SpaceX went heavy on building out data centers, and now they're getting to rent out usage to big companies that need more compute.
